Doesn't seem out of the ordinary. Lots of Whitetail out west have been affected this year as well. Sucks for the ranch though.

If I'm not mistaken....that area, as well as eastern Val Verde County, is the most common area in the state for Anthrax occurrences.

I could be wrong though.

Years ago there was an anthrax outbreak in carta valley area. I am not sure how long they have to disclose it. Sad if barksdale gets hit. I have tons of great memories from that area.

Is't there a medicated feed they feed in those areas?I have a friend that has a whitetail ranh in carta valley. They used to lose deer all the time until they started feeding medicated feed.

LOOKED AT A RANCH IN BRACKETVILLE SERVAL YEARS AGO AND YOU HAD TO SIGN A PAPER THAT IT WAS A AREA WHERE ANTRAX OCCURED THAT WAS 12-13 years ago.

My buddies place is just outside Campwood and he was hit really hard in the anthrax outbreak years ago, especially on the axis. We made sure to wear gloves when cleaning deer for a couple of years after that breakout.

My brother got on a lease about 12-15 yrs ago in Brackettville that had been effected by Anthrax. It killed off the deer and the owner was throwing the dead deer that he would find in a hole and not saying a word.

Edwards county, Val verde, northern Kinney county and northern uvalde are the worst areas.

It can be found in any county but the conditions are optimal in these core counties for outbreaks. It's a naturally occurring spore in the ground that is set off by a hot dry period followed by a cool wet period.

You have to fill out an anthrax disclosure if you sell in these counties.

It's funny, that map doesn't show a single case for Val Verde, which is hit every few years.

I got suckered into a lease in Val Verde a few year ago, near Juno - which is one of the worst area (I came to learn).

It sucked, because there were virtually NO deer in over 25,000 acres.

When I started digging into it, I found that there was a massive outbreak 2 years before I was on the lease and it wiped out virtually everything on several ranches.

When I got the records from the outbreak, and started asking around - the ranchers and lease managers were evasive and vague at best - at worst they outright lied.

They comments I heard over and over were things like "Well, I don't know personally of any anthrax kills", "I haven't seen any dead animals", "Is that so?, news to me", "Well, there are rumors, but I haven't seen anything", etc. etc. etc.

Mind you, this were on ranches that lost hundreds of animals and in one case, were burning carcasses - but it was still "Well, I don't know anything personally".

They just won't talk or admit to it - and part of it has to do with legal requirements for sale. If they talk or admit they know, then they MUST provide disclosure statements. But if they squeeze by saying "I don't know anything personally", then there is no disclosure issue.

One former rancher in the area told me: "Sure we know we have kills almost every 2-3 years. But unless an autopsy is done and/or a report filed, then it's just anyone's GUESS that it was Anthrax. That's why when we would find dead animals, we just wouldn't do anything - and heaven forbid - make a report. Without absolute official confirmation, then it is just a dead animal, cause unknown - and no disclosure is needed"

So keep that in mind when you see these maps and numbers. Those are ONLY the OFFICIAL confirmed cases reported and documented. I garantee you there are hundreds of more kills that are never reported, never documented, and never show on the stats. Like the map for Val Verde county. Zero cases - yeah, right!

Anthrax has been found in over half the counties in Texas IIRC. Don't think that map is very accurate.

That map isn't accurate at all

Look at the TPWD map that shows the triangle zone for anthrax.
