Ok, another wrench on this topic, as the law is written the only exclusion are those with a CHL. Well what about law enforcement? Carrying a weapon in which they have qualified with per TCLEOSE requirements and are legally able to carry on or off duty? I asked my local GW this question, showed him my badge and warrant of appointment, he did not know the answer to my question and said he would have to get back with my on that. Have yet to see him again BUT I don't understand how the law itself only acknowledges a person with a CHL and makes no mention of law enforcement. I would seriously be ticked to be cited for not having a CHL, I'm allowed to carry anywhere/anytime with some exclusions (like an airport). But by the context of this law, not while bow hunting legal game. Don't get it.

Just my opinion...if you are concerned about self-defense, get a CHL and carry. Self-defense is self-protection against "anything" that can harm you.

I had a game warden check me 2 years ago. He asked about any firearms. I told him there was a 45 in my bag. He checked it out. It was on an empty chamber in the bottom of my bag. I was completely legal in all other ways. He just looked at me and said, "So, you were hog hunting, Right.". I said yep.

NONAPPLICABILITY.(a) Sections 46.02 and 46.03 do not apply to:(1) peace officers or special investigators under Article 2.122, Code of Criminal Procedure, and neither section prohibits a peace officer or special investigator from carrying a weapon in this state, including in an establishment in this state serving the public, regardless of whether the peace officer or special investigator is engaged in the actual discharge of the officer's or investigator's duties while carrying the weapon;

I sent the same question into TPWD last year. We had a few federal officers that were required by law to have there service weapon at all times, so I thought it would be interesting to get an answer from TPWD.
TPWD said that they could not have their side arm on them while bow hunting, regardless of what was required of the federal officers. (I will look for their response, I think I deleted it).
I think in reality that any peace officer would not have an issue, any warden that would try to confiscate a firearm or issue a fine, might find himself in a pickle, especially when dealing with a federal officer.

I just have to laugh at the fact that an exclusion is made for a CHL holder but fails to mention a peace officer. I carry everyday and everywhere. I do monthly pistol training courses put on by my training staff. Tactical training so not just shooting at a stationary target while standing still, many drills we shoot while moving and at different positions utilizing cover or concealment. Plus two qualifications for the two pistols I use for work. So I shoot a lot of rounds annually, and am not acknowledged to be able to carry as the way this law is written. What makes a CHL holder more qualified to carry than a peace officer?

I carry pretty much everywhere even when bowhunting, Wall I'm willing to take the challenge if they want to ticket me for it.

Per the TPWD web site you may only carry a firearm if you have a CHL and then you may carry a CONCEALED weapon.

During Rifle season you can carry as many pistols while bowhunting as you'd like. Just not during regular archery season .
