Y'all are going to be shocked. This is why I say that guessing a pigs weight on these pictures is difficult at best. I replaced my scale this year and check it against a known weight, so I believe it is pretty dang close.

Looks young with skinny legs. With nothing to relate to, size wise, I'm gonna guess 121..

Definitely looks young. His nuts don't stick out much, and he's too slim. Looks a lot like the 85 pounder I got in my trap earlier this week.

I would say he is in the 125-150 range. But like said above, hard to judge with no relative sizes around...he may be small like the one I recently shot at 50-75 lbs ??

OK.... Thanks for all the guesses. I've said before that I think it is hard to guess the weights on here. There are so many things that affect the picture you see. Different game cameras, different lenses. Yadyadayada... What does surprise me is that everyone guessed under on this pic. That is the opposite of my experience. Regardless, I think it is an interesting exercise. I did test the scale with known accurate weights. I know the weights are precise and that the scale showed to be accurate repeatedly. That said, the hog weighed 184 pounds. The pic makes him look much smaller than he actually was.

What a fun test!
Okay, how big did you think he was in the original image when you saw it?

I have to be honest and say I would have guessed low. I still believe that isn't the norm, but it demonstrates to me that these game camera pics simply son't offer enough info generally to make a good guess. That...or none of us should be gambling in Vegas...

That...or none of us should be gambling in Vegas... Well, here is your chance to become a millionaire!!! You need to make stakes that you can drive into the ground by your feeders with yard stick on them......kinda like the ruler on the door of convience stores to measure the height of perps as they exit... Hell, hunters buy enough deer bomb, scent hiders and crap like that, a "drive in the ground yardstick indicator" should be a hit!

Vern, people do that all the time, making note of a given level on anchor stakes as being a certain height. The problem there is that the hog are often at some distance from the camera different from the stakes and that the camera isn't at the exact height of the hog. The result is that if the camera is lower than the back of the hog and the hog in front of the stake, it appears TALLER. If the camera is higher than the hog and the hog in front of the stake, the hog appears SHORTER.
The opposite results occur when the hog is behind the stake.
The greater the disparity in height between the hog you are trying to measure and the height of the camera, the greater the error. The greater the disparity of distance between the hog and the measuring stake, the greater the error.
We see this all the time when people place a camera low to the ground and take a picture of a downed hog with the hunter at some distance behind it. The hog looks HUGE compared to the hunter, hence the hog must be huge, right? This is 'forced perspective.'
The notion of forced perspective happens with knowns and with unknowns as well. So you can be fooled because you think you understand what is going on when you really don't.
Why did so many of us guess the weight wrong? Pictures don't lie. They don't tell the truth, either. They are just pictures. We interpret what we see and we often get it VERY WRONG. Many of us assumed this was a young hog, which is right. However, it would appear we assumed that it was probably close to the camera, hence why it looked bigger, but knew it must be younger and so must be smaller. So multiple interpretive mistakes were made.
Being present and seeing the hog walk by is one thing. Having the camera present and taking a singular picture from a distance unknown to most of us is completely different.

Being present and seeing the hog walk by is one thing. Having the camera present and taking a singular picture from a distance unknown to most of us is completely different. Marking the same height at different locations (fence post / t-post / trees, etc) and then having the aperture of the camera set at that height can help to triangulate a more accurate measurement. Also for those that use "come and go" traps, you can also use sewing string tied across the opening at different heights to check how big of an animals is coming in provided deer or other animals aren't hitting your traps.
