Hi yall. Been following the forum for a while and decided I needed to get involved. I'm a student at A&M and enjoy dove and duck hunting the area.
I recently got a new shotgun (Remington Versa-Max) and it came with Improved Modified and Light Modified chokes. I was wondering the use of these chokes? I've used Improved, Modified and Full before but have no experience with these two. I've researched them but was just wondering if yall have any hands on experience with them?
Thanks and Gig'em!

In my eye the LM is the best all around dove choke that there is. In a single barrel gun thats what in it, in a double at least one barrel will be sporting a LM choke.

I generally shoot mod at everything except turkeys. However, light mod is a great dove choke, and improved mod makes a great late season goose and pheasant choke.
But really, the difference between light mod, mod, and improved mod will not make a difference on your hunt. IMO.

Funny you should ask. I just got in the mail my Carlson LM choke. As an avid dove and duck hunter I always shot IC at ducks and Mod at dove. Well I ordered a LM and I put it in the Vinci just now. I hope to give it a workout on the ducks tomorrow then dove in the evening tomorrow. I'll give a report of how it works out. Hopefully I'll be doing a lot less choke swapping. I sometimes forget to switch it and end up shooting the wrong choke.

Light Mod is a great choke for Trap, in fact it is really THE choke for shooting Trap. Improved Modified is almost as tight as a full choke and you'll wanna save that one for turkeys and coyotes.
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

Briley calls their LM choke a "dove buster". I agee with the others that it works great for doves!

Why is it that every single choke thread, people say what chokes should be used for certain birds.
A choke is what controls the pattern of the shot, certain distances require a different choke.
How can somebody say that an improved cylinder is the best choke for dove...what if my dove hunts consist of high flyers?
Or improved cylinder for ducks...what if I'm just pass shooting high flying ducks?
Figure the approximate distance of the shots you will be taking, then just find a happy medium.
If the birds are close, improved cylinder If the birds are mid range, modified If the birds are far, full. If the birds are in between...improved modified, or light modified.
There is no specific choke for a bird

There is no specific choke for a bird You're 100% wrong I shoot steel for ducks and lead for dove. Thus with an IC steel I get a (similar to lead)mod pattern. With lead and Mod I yet again get a Mod pattern. So I have the same pattern and don't puff dove or teal at 10 yards yet can still teach out and get one at 37yards

I have used the IM for ducks with Winchester Bismuth loads. Worked great for longer shots!

So what happens when I shoot a close bird with a Mod choke did I just defy physics and throw the whole universe out of sync?

Nobody said you couldn't kill a bird with a mod choke at 8 yards. Just that a mod choke isn't THE choke for dove or THE choke for ducks. Chokes aren't species specific.
Is this really that difficult of a concept to grasp?

No I'm just saying a Mod is my all around "pattern" thus I shoot a IC for ducks and Mod for dove i.e lead, to accomplish this.
Ps I was being facetious with my comment, everyone had an opinion and a style and we all know they won't match on this forum. Jeff E is going to disagree just to disagree. What's the old saying more than one way to skin a cat, and it's debated as to what that saying really means.

Shot nothing but LM at ducks for 10 years now. If I could only have one choke LM would be it.

And here we go again...... I keep a Briley extended mod in my gun, period. I never take it out. I shoot it at everything and it kills everything, bottom line. If I need something heavier I grab my 10ga.

Why don't you read my post again, let it sink in...then decide if you still think I'm wrong.

There is no specific choke for a bird This is correct with the one cavitie that you must check your load with your choke to check the pattern. I will also say that not all chokes shoot/pattern the same. I like my Carlson LM but my Briley got chunked. The biggest key is to pattern your gun... With all that said LM is my favorite general use choke.

I'm okay with Old Marsbar. At least he's not some backwoods Harvey Hero that thinks he's God's gift to duck hunting because he has been at it for 2 seasons with his POS 870...
the thing about baiting is, even a rookie hunter could have a 170 bird season if they bait holes
