Throw my name in for the rifle hunt. Not sure if I could do it, but I'm interested to see total cost. I pretty much have no gear "geared" toward a mountain elk hunt.

Although I do like this

its not that much different from any other type of hunting out of a tent.

water jugs, tent, cots, some rope, saw, pack frame, really all you need.

we drove up there last year and 3 of us had all our gear in the back of a half ton truck.

How where you going to get 3 Elk back if you were all successful?

So would I. We'll see what everyone wants to do. This ones probably going to be public.

wouldn't mind doing public if we could get tags or a limited entry unit.

my concern is the woods will be crawling with hunters. although it will differ from unit to unit

odds of that were slim to none. out of 3 hunters I was the only one that even saw any elk.

group of guys I went with have been going for 15 years and they have never all tagged out. we had enough room for 2 elk we estimated. we did have a rack that went into the trailer hitch for just in case's

So, if you buy a $600 bull tag you're out the $600 if you don't kill?

Where I've hunted, the woods are not crawling with hunters. The roads are. The easy trails have a few. The sides of the mountain are not, and the elk know it.

This can be done out of a tent, or it can be done from a camper, or it can be done from a lodge in town. There are campgrounds right in the middle of good hunting and lodges not far from it. We always took a camper and stayed in a campground right by where we hunted.

Yeah. They don't offer refunds.

I'd be in for the DIY rifle hunt on the dates you mentioned. The area sounds good for a DIY.

if you know a spot I'm down. we hunted unit 62 and their was a good number of hunters during bow and muzzle loader season.

I had to hike a long way to get away from folks.

I bet Taylor would be game for a THF group archery hunt at TNT if he has an empty week next year.

Marking this thread to keep up with it. Would be a great learning experience even if an elk wasn't taken. Then hopefully those new to elk hunting could eventually do it on their own.

I hunted 711 a couple times, along with another unit I don't remember.

There will be a lot of hunters in any unit during the OTC hunts, but in the right units, they are easy to get away from.

Another option would be putting in for one of the better units in New Mexico, and using Colorado as back up, if anyone is interested. The draw hunt would be much better, but tough to draw, and it costs a couple hundred more.

That's usually what I do.

that would be ok too. the extra money is well worth it to hunt good country

Sneaky, I'm in for the rifle hunt. I've never hunted in CO I used to backpack up North of Chama. So I will need help on the hunting end, the packing end hopefully I got it. This is going to belike basic again in some respects. This may be the last shot for some of us but to me the experience with others and to be hunting will be priceless.

Interested to see this develop. As a few have mentioned, I would largely be interested in an archery hunt

To get into good elk country you need to get away from "No automobile or ATV Units" Horse only or foot. Ive got several untis up around Steamboat that are great units to hunt in and are not over hunted. These are units that just opened up in the last couple years and most of the public dont know about them. My cousin is a Gamewarden in colorado and I get all the good stuff from him that doesnt get to the public. All my family lives in Montrose or Grand Junction and all Elk hunt, I could give you a few good units to pick from to help you plan it out..I might be able to get a group af 4-5 for a bow hunt on my parents place and stay in a cabin for your hunt. We kill out every year, ill do some checking see if I can make this happen.

Branden, that would be great. If you have some info on some less pressured units, that would help a lot.

I think we should split this in to two groups. A rifle group and a bow group. Who wants to handle the bow group?

Yes, and I absolutely love hunting elk in the rut. I just don't have the time to shoot my bow enough for a hunt like this right now. I'm lucky to shoot my rifle a few times a year.
