More than 100 elk found were dead on a ranch about 20 miles north of Las Vegas this week.
Sky News 13 flew over the gruesome discovery on the sprawling 75,000-acre Buena Vista Ranch near Mora. The elk weren't shot, so the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is investigating just what caused the deaths.
Their top suspicion: something called Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, or EHD. The often-fatal disease is caused by insect bites.
http://www.krqe.com/news/local/elk-herd-...NPPhF4.facebook

Tim Wells the host of Relentless Persuit just had a show where he said he lost 12 deer he found on his ranch one was a 170" buck all from EHD it happens within 24hrs If it was EHD its would be pretty apparent very quickly. But its highly unlikely because means the entire herd got bit by insects at the same water source and we are talking 100 animals. For them to all contract it and die same time frame is very odd Sounds more like poison

I agree more of them eating something toxic or the water supply was contaminated. The water supply is highly likely since they could all drink from that same source. EHD does not always act fast.

We lost a large part of our deer herd in NW Missouri last year. I didn't even make the trip up.

That is very strange. I'll bet the land owner is freaking out. That is a lot of potential income out the window. Plus, if they aren't sure what it is, there's no guaranty that it won't effect humans. I'd be tempted to get my family out of there until a cause could be determined.

EHD is not out of the ordinary since it is a small midge or gnat that is around stagnant low water sources. Elk do congregate at water late day. Just can't see it effecting that many that quickly in my limited experience with it.

As a guess maybe a 100 miles. Not even as the aliens fly! For aliens, it is more like 600 miles, but closer to 850 for those going by car.

RMEF posted this subject on their F/B page. Unit 46 I believe. Hope it is an isolated area. This could prove tragic if it spreads.

I agree with Bobo and Stxranchman. EHD may very well be the cause, but I doubt it.....not 100 animals at the same time. Not every animal would be susceptible to the disease, some would have a natural immunity. The warning signs of EHD come on fast and furious. Some die rather quickly, whereas others linger for days. Additionally, others will contract the disease, exhibit some signs of infection and make a full recovery.

EHD is running rampant this year in Wyoming and parts of Montana, particularly among whitetails. That said, 100+ dead elk in one big bunch sounds a bit far-fetched for EHD, bluetongue, or any other disease process.
I wonder if they were bunched together tight enough for lightning to be the culprit?
