Any tips or suggestions? I caught a little spike recently that really freaked out/beat himself up as I walked to the trap to free him. He's a unicorn now

I take thorny brush or limbs and hang/stand in front of the door opening. The hogs will root in and the deer won't try it. This a a trap made out of couple of panels. It is a "6" shape trap.

Had the same problem in our traps. We were just using plain ol corn and we caught 4 deer in a row. Soooo.... We started souring corn for atleast 3-4 weeks before using it for bait. Since then no deer and all hogs!

Sour corn works until they get hungry then nothing stops them..

I have caught one deer on soured corn and one corn I had poured a bit of diesel on, so now I just put thorny limbs in front of the door.

Had a doe a few years back go ballistic as soon as she saw me. I ran up & opened the door but it was too late. She fell out before I could even get the door all the way up. Stone cold dead! I just stood there with with my jaw dropped. I havent set that hog trap since. Luckily it was in the middle of deer season & I had plenty of tags left. That kinda upset me a bit!

With the open top traps like the "6" shape, can the deer just jump out if they wander in?

This doe went nuts when I walked up to the trap, she put her head through the wire and got stuck. She just froze there. I thought she was going to break her neck, but she never moved. I folded her ears back to release her head and she ran out unhurt. We tried sour corn for hogs on evening/night hunts. The deer would show up and eat it all before the pigs came out. We switched to regular corn, much easier. I like the idea of some branches in the opening.

I put some agarita branches near the top to discourage deer from going inside. I don't know whether it worked as a deer deterrant or not, but I did have an 80 pound boar trapped the last day on was on the ranch. I only bait in the afternoons/evenings too.

I have heard of guys having a long rope tied to the door that runs a good ways away from the trap behind some brush. That way they can pull the door open from further away.

Try soaking your corn in a bucket of diesel over night. I haven't found it a problem with deer or critters eating it much less trapping a deer. Worked for me

Had a hog trap set up on the edge of an oat field. One little curious heifer calf managed to get her self trapped several times. She would just lay down and wait on us to show up and release her. This went on until the grazing played out and her mama moved on to another part of the place.

I've thought about cutting the tops out of my traps so the deer can jump out. I usually catch about 2 deer a year...

I make tall traps without roofs. Deer jump out, hogs are trapped

Soured corn seems to keep the deer out.

I caught a 150 class buck in mine a few years ago. After that, we cut the top off the trap. No issues since.

does cutting the roof off only encourage more deer to go in and eat the corn, knowing they can get out? we're probably just going to mount a 2x10 or 2x12 above the opening to make it harder for taller deer to enter the trap. Our trap is waist high on me (at least 36 inches tall).
