before the 7mm-08 crowd jumps in, I'll say, in my opinion, if you're after nothing larger than deer... .25-06 is a great, flat shooting, low recoil cartridge.

If you're looking for a little more punch, .270 is the ticket IMO. Elk aren't much of a match for it either (although I've seen more than a few fall to a .25-06).

Someone's going to say .300 win mag or .300wsm. I own both. Definitely not a starter gun. I've seen too many people develop a flinch from going too big too soon. And it's very hard to cure them of this flinch.

.243 Win., .257 Roberts, .25-06 Rem., .270 Win., 7mm-08 Rem., 7mm Rem. Mag., .30-30 Win., .308 Win., .30-06 Springfield, 300 Win. Mag.

List is not limited to these but they are fairly common here in Texas.

Ask your friends and family and hunting buddies to let you try their rigs out. Lever action, bolt action maybe even a pump action or single shot. Which rifle feels most comfortable to you? Which rifle seems to be the most accurate in your hands? One of the keys to accurate shooting is practice, practice and practice. Try different rifles out and then when you have more of a feeling for them, pick one out.

Good advice right here!

Which ever one you can shoot well, put the bullet on target, and delivers more than or equal to 1000 ft/lbs of energy.

I bet you're not a hand-loader so I'll throw the 6.5 Creedmore and 7mm-08 in the mix.

My first statement supersedes my second, though.

LOL! You should be more open minded and not fixate on a single solution. wink

A first timer should try his friends equipment so he can discover his own preferences. For target practice at the range, he should buy something with inexpensive ammo.

Good advice right here!

You might want to check the price and availability of ammo for the various calipers since you'll be buying it for many years to come. This includes those times when you forgot to bring it and have just one store nearby that sells it.

Get a .243 or 7mm-08 in a Remington 700 SPS. Easy, cheap, reliable, shoots great, ammo cost and availability not a problem.

There are a lot of different choices because there are a lot of ways to hunt deer. The perfect rifle for hunting sendero's in South Texas might not work well in the woods of East Texas. That said, a standard scoped bolt action sporter in a non magnum, between 243 on the small end and 30/06 on the big end, will work fine 99% of the time.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Having both a .243 and .270, I added a 25-06 to my collection last season and love it. A little less recoil than the .270 and more knockdown than the .243. Ammo is a little more pricey however.

The fact that the 25-06, .270, and 30-06 are all built on the same shell casing serves as evidence that it's a versatile power package.

Go buy a nice, wood stocked rifle in .25-06 or .270, throw a leaupold on it and go forth and kill

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

A good old fashion 30-30 lever action would be an excellent choice. Any of these choices you can pick up ammo in any little MOM & POP store that sells ammo. Hornady has their Leverevolution ammo that is supposed to extend the range of the 30-30.

I would recommend getting a good bolt action .270 and putting at least decent quality 3-9x scope on it. You will be well prepared to hunt deer in any place with such a setup. Other good caliber choices include 30-06 (heavier recoil), .308 (you will be competing with tactical guys during ammo craze), 7-08 (ammo little harder to find in rural). There are of course a bazillion other calibers to choose from but they are all some minor variant of ballistics of these rounds unless you go up in caliber/power (which is not needed) or down in caliber/power (may make sense if recoil sensitive).
