I like .270 Win. and 7mm-08 Rem.
But that's just me.

280 remington. For a platform, I'd probably go Remington 700, or Encore if I wanted a carry friendlier rifle.

That's pretty good aggiehunter03 but you forgot a few like the 224 clark, 256 newton, 500 s&w, and ect. But nsmike's last statement sum's up the decent average starter deer rifle. Except, I would expand his range to the 35 cal. The 338 federal, 358 win, and 35 whelan are also decent deer cartridges and if you ever got an itching to cast will perform better. But anything with the base case of the 30-06 or 308 will do the trick. Just differences of opinons, recoils, terrains, and methods of hunting. All of them will work on a broadside standing deer within 150 yards, after that the differences begin to take shape.
Looks like I need to clean my glasses. I see the 256 newton was mentioned. Now with failing ole eyes, I see where trying to count points in brushy woods and WDM zones can make me want to shoot a doe for the grill.

There are more deer killed with 22 shorts, than people want to admit.

There are more deer killed with 22 shorts, than people want to admit. That is the preferred caliber for hunting the long pasture after dark.

I guess that the OP now understands that there is no "best". I'm a fan of the 260 and the 270, personally.

For simplicity or use, accuracy, and capacity, you are going to want a bolt action. For your first rifle you are going to want a lighter recoiling yet flat trajectory and adequate powered caliber. Short action calibers that come to mind are .243, .260, 7-08, and .308. Long action calibers are .25/06, .270, .280, and .30/06. Any of these are great deer rounds. I have shot all of these and killed deer with all except .260 and .280. When I go deer hunting I most often grab either my 7-08 (tikka) or one of my rem 700's in .270. With those guns I feel confident to cleanly take a deer at any reasonable distance without any excessive recoil or cost for cartridges. The real answer is there are more good choices for deer rifles and calibers than bad ones...

that's a huge list, but confused which to buy? which one really should i buy that is been used most and popular. Last year the answer to that question was whichever rifle I could borrow. Took my first deer with a .243 and it dropped after two strides. Later in the season all I had was my 'as issued' SKS. The 7.62 x 39 round dropped the deer just as easily. $600 Browning Medallion with $300 optics vs. $150 Romanian peasant rifle. Both did the job equally well. After the season was over I sold my SKS for 3x what I had paid for it and started shopping for my first 'modern' deer rifle. Like you, I soon realized that there were a ton of choices out there. I agree with the advice already given, try out as many variants as you can to help you narrow it down to something you are comfortable with. In my area almost any rifle will drop a deer if 'you' hit the mark. The majority of the places, on the land we hunt, have 75 to 150yd shooting lanes. There are a few fields that offer 200+ views, but we don't hunt them due to concerns about adjacent roads and neighbors. Because of my very fixed budget I went shopping for a decent rifle with good optics for a good price. I considered a .243 to be the lower threshold and the 30-06 to be the upper. As luck/fate would have it I came across a used 1995 Winchester Model 70 in .270 that met those requirements and my budget. It came with a really mice Leopold scope that easily covers the distances I shoot. Really, I could have just as easily have gone for a quality .243 or .308 with no regrets. I have been very pleased with the .270. It shoots extremely well and delivers more than enough energy to drop a deer. The ammo is plentiful and cheap, even with the current craziness going on. Shot placement ranks highest in my book. A good comfortable 'fit' along with a decent trigger and quality optics trumps caliber and overcomes a multitude of ugly. But I am still very much a green wheat and learning as I go. Some day I might have the budget and desire for premium actions and richly grained 'furniture', but today my main objectives are simple, a clean kill and meat in the freezer.
2nd Amendment: Use it or loose it.

What type of terrain are you in? How far of a shot? How good of a shot are you? Do you want a heavier rifle that will have less recoil or do you want a lighter one? How much do you want to spend?

Best gun, bolt action rifle is the most common.
Personally I use a 7600 pump in .30-06 now
I used a 700 in .270 until I shot the barrel out...took 20+ years..
The most common calibers are going to be .270, .308, .30-06 and .30-30 for deer.
You'll be able to go into just about any store that sells ammo and find one of those calibers. That's important if you don't reload.....ammo availability is going to be key.
Even if you do reload you can forget to pack your ammo and still find new stuff at the local Walmart on the way to the lease.

I have killed whitetals with a 12 gauge Remington Model 870, a 243 Remington Model 7 and a 30-06 Remington Model 700. This coming season I am going to try my new to me Winchester Model 70 25-06....my son has used a 7mm Magnum Ruger Model 77, a 280 Remington Model 725 (my dad's) and a 50 caliber muzzleloader. Neither of us have ever lost a deer. If it were me buying a new deer rifle I would go with a bolt action in a popular caliber like 243 or 30-06 (ammo is available most places) with a good quality scope in fixed power....just my two cents sir...

I agree with almost everyone that the shooter is much more important than the gun. Almost any center fire caliber will drop a deer if the bullet goes in the right place, so if you're on a budget, buy a cheap rifle in a standard caliber and spend your leftover cash on practice ammo and range time. I went hunting with a husband and wife once that each shot really nice bucks. The wife's bullet snapped the deer's neck and it didn't go two steps. Her hubby gut shot a deer with a 7mm Magnum and we ended up tracking it for half a mile with dogs. Turns out he has a pretty bad flinching problem when he shoots that cannon. I don't remember a lot of the details because I was busy cleaning my deer I shot with my 60 year old .30-30. One shot, one step. DRT

that's a huge list, but confused which to buy? which one really should i buy that is been used most and popular. Mr. KnowItAll says .30-06 is the most popular cartridge .270 not far behind for deer .308 is the do it all precision work and hunting .30-30 is the brush cartridge of choice in E Texas if you get one of the above you can not go wrong as long as you pick the 30-06

OH my favorite is the 6.5 Creedmoor, ammo is relatively easy to find and I have dropped deer out to 800 yards with it. It recoils like a 243

Go ahead and get a 257 wby. Then you'll be good up to cape buffalo.
Edit to add. Speed kills.
