Good question? Never seen anything like that before, bet it was an "ugly" critter.... Wonder if it maybe it had a defect and was deformed? Got my curiosity up now! Will be watching to see if anyone can identify.

Clearly a squatch...
No really, the orbital area is very large, and doesn't match the rest of the skull size at all, and the teeth (and jaw structure) don't match at all. I would agree that this is a deformed animal of some sort and met its demise due to lack of Ability to eat.
There is a condition in humans called treacher-Collins syndrome where there are serious facial deformations, although this is not a treacher Collins type abnormality, I wouldn't be surprised to see such abnormalities in animals.
Whatever the type of animal this is, it is an omnivore or predator given the teeth

Is it only a few inches in size?

Looks like the skull of an English Bulldog or other flat faced or pug variety canine. I typed "skull of a bulldog" into Yahoo Images and got several looks at skulls very similar. Sure looks alien at first glance, though.

Anna, our former pet English BD, is buried in the backyard. I guess I could dig her up and see what her melon looks like for comparison sake.
