I would grab my AR. I know it well and have spare parts for it. I also trust it.

AKs just don't fit me well and are not ergonomic. I also don't KNOW how to quickly disassymble one or diagnose any problems. Could I figure them out....sure I could but in a SHTF/BUG OUT situation I want KNOW my weapon very well.

IMHO, AK platform is easier to break down and troubleshoot than AR. Ergonomics can be fixed with furniture.

As far as ugly....have you seen an Arsenal SGL21? They are sexy

Btw, i like the AR platform better but AK is a no non-sense, battle tested, global tested platform that even child soldiers can learn to use.

I would have to grab my AR. Not mentioned is that the AR is a "take-down" rifle that can be split in two pieces for transportation or concealment. The AR is also far more accurate at longer distances. Additionally, a person can carry far more .223 ammo then 7.62x39.

I would suggest grab what you can... till you can upgrade. By that I mean, till you can acquire someone else's carbine. First rule is to have a GUN. Something that goes bang every time... like a GLOCK or a 1911.

AK's and GLOCK's --- lots of people say they are ugly guns...but they do go bang every time I've pulled the trigger on one. And, I have pulled the trigger on each...many, many times. To quote someone ... "down-n-dirty, nitty gritty kind of weapon that loves to be abused and ran hard."

AR's and 1911's --- Are like fine race cars. Care for them right and they will run forever...almost, every time. Both are guns I have also ran thousands of rounds through...literally. Keep your are AR WET and it will run!

Personally... I prefer both the AR and AK just because I am completely familiar with the manual of arms for them.

No matter what you have... learn to run it good...then learn to run it great!

Then remember your empty hand skills, knife skills, survival skills... something you will use more likely before all the others... MEDICAL skills.

Train like you expect to fight... Fight like you train!

Stay safe!

Ghillie suit, AK with day/night scope and external battery pack...I am ready for anything hogs, zombies and other 2 legged threats. With the .22 and shotgun (w/birdshot and 00buckshot) I am prepped for any type of hunting/protection

FAL. If you run out of ammo it'll still make a nice heavy club.

Neither! I am going with a 9mm blow back. Uses the same magazines as my s&w 9mm.

It has ridden in the trunk for 100,000 miles already.

I don't have either, but I do have a couple Mausers, a 1903a3 and a Garand.

That being said, I'd probably go with the 1903a3. There's a lot of 30-06 out there, but a Garand can only shoot certain loads: too much pressure can wreck the op-rod and too little makes it a single fire.

Some people may laugh about an old bolt gun, but once you practice using stripper clips they are pretty fast shooting.

You take the weapon you are most comfortable with. If you have to use it to protect yourself, and are successful once or more, there will be plenty of guns, mags, and ammo laying around for the choosing.

Good point. The oldies are the good ones, especially the 03-A3 or the k98 (which I've gotten pretty fast with too). cheers

I think it all comes down to personal opinion... I'm 10x more comfortable with an AR than an AK. However, I'm also much more comfortable with my pistol than a rifle as well, but thats just me.

If you want to scare them at 300 yards grab the AK if you want to hit them at 300+ yards grab the AR, I've had a few AK's over the years, didn't mind them but was never to attached to them hence my selling them. They are reliable, but the tolerances are so loose that is why, which also gives you lesser accuracy. I like the modular side of the AR too caliber changes are quick and easy. To stir the pot, an AR in the 7.62x39 isn't half bad.

I would be staying put with my AR. In a SHTF situation involving loss of power, 80% of the population would be dead in 30 days.

If you had a Colt LE901, you would just need the basic 308 weapon, a 223/5.56 upper, and a 22LR upper. You would be set for anything with three uppers using one lower.

I'm grabbing my Accuracy International 308, because as mentioned above....if you want to scare AK, want to hit AR, want to kill AI rifle

I figure I'd be able to "acquire" what I want

if it's anarchy season, and someone
is 300 yards away, i will be busy
staying very low to the ground and
still and quiet. when the guys that
want to get in a firefight are killed,
and the freebooters and gangs of roaming
marauders leave, i'll slip out to where
their body is and see if any usable gear is left.

unless you have 40 or 50 backup buddies, you'll
die trying to rambo your way through post
apocalyptic america. you can't kill 100
crackheads carrying bricks when you're
by yourself.

This is the truth, really think about it.

Also, this stuff about scaring them instead of hitting them with an AK is non-sense. It's here say from bad shooters that shoot at the dirt.

Any properly built AK will hit at 300, 1st shot with a triggerman

I shoot to 300m (328 yards) regularly with my AK, and it is just as accurate as the bushmaster AR I shoot.
Matter of fact, it will kill faster/better at that distance too, the guys that will be scared are his comrades standing next to him, not I with my AK. Hope they have better cover than cars and trees, because the AK will punch right through them and drop them, can you say that about the AR? muyloco

This would be perfect response to all those gun grabbers, speaking ignorance about black guns, shooting a thousand rounds a minute, killing everyone in sight.
