I've been fortunate enough to hunt both the King & Kenedy ranches as well, mostly the Kenedy... specifically the Barreta and Magote. Consider myself incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity some years back... now I'd have to be a bajillionaire to be able to hunt down there. Years ago my dad knew a guy that had something like 500 sections in NM. Now that makes the leases around here look small.

I varmint hunted that place with a group one time, they told the guy in charge of us that if he got us lost they were not coming to look for us. I paid a lot of attention to where we went and how I thought was the way to get put of there.

That was privately owned. A common statement is "I would hunt a high fence if it was X amount of acres" or "it is fair if it is X size"
which gets me to thinking.....what is the biggest size place you have ever hunted? what is the size of the place your normally hunt?
i hear alot of "well, it would be fair if the property was 10k acres" how many people who say that have even been on a 5k acre place, let alone a 10k acre place? 85% of landholdings in texas are under 1k acres. It's funny you should mention 10K...that's exactly what I've hunted...It was split up into 2 tracts of property called the East Slator and West Slator Ranches in Webb Co. near Laredo. I have Been down there 2 times on Wounded Warrior hunts.

We had a Quail lease South of Sterling city the whole thing was 18,000 acres, but 12,000 was the Key ranch & the other 6,000 was the Bodine ranch. Had another one near Rotan, that was 16,000 acres if I remember right (was only on it one year). Now we are in Soutwest OK, the Ranch is about 30,000 acres but I think we have about 20,000 of it. We get to hunt all of it at certain times though.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Current lease is a little over 3000 acres. I have hunted here for several years and it is the biggest place I have hunted. The biggest deer I have killed though came off of the 30 acres behind my parents house in Scottsville, TX.

Driscol in Duval -10, 000-100, 000 depends on who you ask Bruni in Webb-the main pasture where an old ranching lady who was either a bruni or married to one at some point. 10, 000+ place had a lot of artifacts and mountain lions. San Miguel-Mexico (don't know for sure because it wS part of the Yano. And the Yano was supposedly bigger than the King so 800, 000 plus?) Brazil pasture- Mexico 5, 000 LF lawyer ranch- owner was a lawyer for the Longoria family. 10, 000 HF mexico buddy of mine leases a ranch from one of the Bruni's. fantastic quail hunting down there.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Catto Gage ranch near Marathon and the O2 south of Alpine, not sure of the exact size, but both were monster spreads... Serviced water wells on the O2 when I was in college. We would drive several hours to get back to pavement. In the late 90's it was over 400 sections.

We hunt a pasture close to Louis Bruni's on the Webb/Zapata county line. There are too many Bruni pastures down there and most are large. This particular one had a 31" or so typical killed on it in the early 1990s by a guest hunter that created some minor controversy if memory serves me correctly.

I grew up in far west Texas, namely Hudspeth County. At the time the 3rd largest ranch in Texas, The Mahle/Hass Ranch was at our back door. We had full access to it. It was not like hunting in East Texas at all. Walk & Stalk. Spent 2 days tracking a 10 point Muley, in and out of the canyons on the Mountain range there. Reportedly, the Ranch was 900 sections. Also had acess to the West Ranch which was in New Mexico to out North. I was told it was larger than the King Ranch at the time, but since it was in 2 States, it was not registered s being larger. Over half of it was in New Mexico, and the Texas portion was rated as the 2nd largest in Texas. Now I hunt a much smaller tract in East Texas, 1900 acres in Franklin COunty, North of Mt Vernon.

La Escalara in Fort Stockton is 300,000. Use to hunt mule deer their but after the Dad died several years ago, the son's took over shut down hunting. The reply noted on page three in New Mexico that Ted Turner owns is related to this ranch. Ted Turner and Jane Fonda owned this ranch and after the first trip to visit it Jane decided it was worthless and they needed something else. Mr. Lara use to own the ranch in New Mexico that was noted previously so he and Ted traded ranches. Mr. Lara was the contractor that built the river walk in San Antonio.

Was blessed to be able to hunt a 5,000 acre pasture on the (Doff) Briscoe Ranch once. I believe the ranch is over 300,000 total acre though.

I currently hunt/lease on the "La Escalera" in Baylor county which is the Lyda family's 34,000 acre Seymour Division Ranch. My grand father and uncle where invited hunting guests of the Lyda Family on their giant west texas ranch many years ago. According to the family they still lease or sell package hunts on the their "big ranch" in west Texas. Good people.
