That was privately owned. A common statement is "I would hunt a high fence if it was X amount of acres" or "it is fair if it is X size"
which gets me to thinking.....what is the biggest size place you have ever hunted? what is the size of the place your normally hunt?
i hear alot of "well, it would be fair if the property was 10k acres" how many people who say that have even been on a 5k acre place, let alone a 10k acre place? 85% of landholdings in texas are under 1k acres.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

biggest is a place in rusk county i still can hunt if i want, 1500 acres. currently hunting a 45 acre place and a 200 acre (hopefully soon to be 500 acre) lease.
If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

I've hunted on the King Ranch a couple of times. Of course, I was only hunting portions of the ranch, with the largest being 20K acres. The places I ordinarily hunt are much, much smaller at 200 acres or so.

15k acres. A commercial orange grove, 75% fruit trees and 25% palm and oak hammocks or open areas with swamps, dikes and levees. I hunt this property 3 to 4 weekends a year under a depredation permit (hogs and deer).
My normal hunting area ( a lease) is just under 1k acres owned by a large cattle company and I usually hunt 2 to 3 times a month for hogs.

24k & some change...although it meets the guidelines for b&c submissions, there really isn't anything fair chase about it.

I was the only hunter on a ranch of 75,000 acres in South Africa in 2008. It was an amazing, luxurious experience.

70,000 in West Texas, 14,500 in the Panhandle, 4600 in the Hill Country, 5100 and 5800 in South Texas that I hunted on a lot in the last 25 yrs. Lot of other places I hunted on ranged from 25 acres up to 56000 in size but just a hunt or two to season leases when I was younger.

The biggest privately owned contiguous piece of land I've ever hunted was the White Horse ranch just outside Van Horn, as a guest & part of a 15 man hunting party of Industry Representatives. Dunno how many sections under a non divided high fence, but the HF I was told was 85 miles long around the base of the small mountain range that is on the east side & within sight of Van Horn, on south side of I-20, + couple K's of irrigated ag production outside the HF. Hunted Muley's & Aoudad who had never seen a hunter on the far western edge of the last of 7 mesa's...and could see forever to the curve of the earth in 3 directions.Breath takingly beautiful.
The absolute largest privately owned ranch I've ever hunted, again as a guest, was north of Encinal off Hwy 83. 11 miles off pavement south thru the North boundry push gate to the ranch HQ compound & airstrip, & another 10 miles south past the bunk house to the front gate of the 20K acres of the back pasture my host leased. All low fenced, from the Hwy to the River.
I hunt big & small, whenever and whereever I can. I don't lease anymore and prefer to travel to new destinations whenver possible. Most recently big property was in Archer County on 250-300k acres of owned & leased School Lands north of Olney, again as a guest.
I need to start offering Texoma Striper fishing trips on trade outs to out of stater's like my buddy from West Texas has started...he's going to Wyoming for an antelope hunt in August or September, and drew a Colorado Last Season Cow Elk Hunt tag that'll happen south & west just off the Flattops. Old Dogs CAN be taught new tricks! Cheers Ron

Well I don't really understand the question since the only reason size of the place hunted is relevant in the HF discussion is because of the fence. If it is not HF the size of the place hunted does not matter in discussing HF vs. fair chase.
That said, 3000 acres is the largest private place I have hunted for whitetails. Antelope: 25000 acres
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

March Ranch, San Angelo: 117 sections
I've hunted a number of ranches that were between 1000 acres and 10,000 acres.
By comparison, the smallest pasture on the March was the bull pasture, at 5,000 acres.

I grew up hunting the McElroy. I think back then it was 140k acres as well as all the other land Gulf and Warren had leased in West Tx. Hunted the Mitchell ranch in Terrell County as well. The part of the Mitchell we had leased was 12,000 acres @ $300 per family and all you could kill, 12 families. I guided on Tommy Hares ranches in Terrell as well for 5 years when I was in high school and college. I'm not sure how big his place was, I was told over 100k acres. All I know is I never saw all of it in 5 years. I also guided some mule deer and antelope hunts west of Fort Stockton on some giant acerage. I killed some monster deer and never got inside of a box blind until I was 30. Prices have gotten so high now I'm glad I can still call up some old freinds and go on a real hunt a few times a year.

Lease I have been on for around 20 years is 10k acres. 10k acres isn't that big, our deer come and go and we have pics of the same deer miles apart. Lease in the panhandle was 6k and 15k, Van Horn lease 12k, Fort Davis 5k. Smallest place I lease now is in Kansas.

In Texas, the Kenedy Ranch- 400,000 plus acres, the La Para pasture we lease is 25,000ish.
A ranch almost 500,000 acres in New Mexico near Raton, is the biggest I ever hunted.
I would describe both as free chase.

I would describe both as free chase. how is the hunting on the kennedy? I read a book about Sarita East and how the La Para ranch was aquired by the Catholic Church

Biggest I've hunted was the Rio Bonito, reportedly about 16,000 acres. I hunt a 3,000 acre bow lease just about every year for a week in December. Mostly though I hunt on my place that I bought last year now. It is 224 acres.
The smallest couple I've hunted is on my 12 acres in East Texas and a friend's 5-10 acres around New Braunsfels. Someone has to clear out those neighborhood deer.

Callaghan Ranch. Total acreage 177,000 acres. How long ago was this? When I was on the Callaghan and road around with Joe he told me at that time it was just over 100k. That was in the late 90's or early 2000. They lease 75k out and then kept about 25k for the family to hunt and outfit.
