Went dove hunting Sunday evening. Saw lots of birds, was picky with the shots I was taking bagged some birds. After the hunt I was loading the car. Had eveything in the trunk went to open the door to load my dog and felt a weird sensation on my ankle. Look down to see a damn snake! Hop back to the trunk pull out my gun, load it and shot the snake. I HATE SNAKES!!!

We have never seen a snake in or around where we park. Dunno if he was out earlier because of the cooler weather or not. This actually happened the day I decided to just wear my running shoes. Never again! Felt like an electic fence and stung slightly for some time after. My gf was freakin' out saying "We are going to the hospital!" I told her to turn on the headlights so I could tell if I was screwed or not lol. Picked up the three pieces of the snake to check it out. When looking at it I knew it wasn't a Cottonmouth or Rattler, I just wasn't sure if it was a copperhead or not. Looking at my ankle I had a couple of spots that could have been puntures and a couple of long slight scraps (I guess I have pretty fast reactions). So, instead of the hospital I told her to follow me to her parent's house which is closer. It ended up being a rat snake. So, I scrubbed my ankle with hot soapy water and then put some alcohol on it. Rest assured I am good to go. Just gunna keep a better look out from now on and wear boots.

Maybe he was a blind snake. That would explain why he bit you instead of a rat. Or maybe you put off the same sent as a rat.

Ignorance causes fear, most so called outdoorsmen/women should learn to ID snakes instead of using the backwards @$$ bubba response of "the only good snake is a dead snake" Sounds like Fooshman killed a "good" one. Sounds like more people here need to learn a lot more about snakes and other critters they will encounter in the wild instead of shoot first then see what it is. Is that what you do on ducks and deer or anything else you hunt?????

He said in his post that he wasn't sure what kind of a snake it was that bit him. If he would have started to have a reaction and had to go to the emergency room, don't you think the doctor would have appreciated him having the dead snake with him so they could do a positive ID and start treatment?

I would have done the same thing. The only diffrence there would be, that before we went to the hospital, we are going to the car wash to clean out my drawers.
Who said white men can't jump, throw a snake in front of me and you would think it was Michael Jordan.

x2! I agree, Amen, and you bet! My snake identification skills are 100%. 100% of the snakes I see are dead snakes. I also believe bugs and mice in the house should be killed or squashed.
