Panhandle smoother ranch roads That's for sure. Red talcum dust. Turns to grease when it gets wet.

That's a good un in that pic. The panhandle deer have food year round from the ag fields (cotton seed, peanuts, milo, wheat, etc...) Lots of high fat and protien food. I have seen them drink from leaking pivots and puddles from pivots many times. I love the trans pecos terrain as well. It is fun to fart around in and no telling what varmints you will see in that area. The ease of hunting in the panhandle is pretty sweet too.

Yep panhandle all the way. Whitetails keep cross breeding and pushing out the cool looking mule deer genetics down around us in sanderson. Shooting mule deer bucks with wider main frame 8 racks on them. Kinda cool but I miss the cool 4x4 frame textbook Muley racks.
OMG, this is the best slumber party ever!

Biggest mule deer I ever saw was between Tahoka and Brownfield, from a distance we thought it was a small elk, but it was a huge mule deer. Yep. Some great bucks around there. Trans Pecos is much more raw, if that's the proper term. Wild country, no doubt. Not sure about phone service though. Does AAA go out that far?

Trans Pecos for sure. We have taken some good bucks off our place. If you get lucky and catch the rut in the two weeks you got to hunt.

I'd rather hunt for them in the Trans Pecos any day. I just love that part of the state, and the way you have to hunt them out there.

well, I turned down the trans-pecos lease. Had my hopes all up. What looks like ugly country can be excellent Mule Deer habitat out in West Texas. I had to learn to not look for Whitetail looking cover and habit to more open, low cover on our lease.

Wow. That's probably the 2nd biggest Texas muley I've ever seen. The 1st was also from Gaines County.

That was in 2007 our first year on the ranch. It snowed 12" and had IH-10 shut down along with most of West Texas. They could not hunt much at all the first 2 days. When the sun came out the next day it was bucks moving everywhere. There were 5 bucks together and that buck was killed out of that group. A friend went after another one that was as big or bigger than that buck. I was in Alberta MD hunting and could not get there for another 4 days.

When the sun comes out and snow is covering the ground those are the deer hunting conditions you dream about, especially in Texas. We're lucky on the Pitchfork because we usually get at least a couple hunting days like that every year.

It's the Elk that are bad on the desert habitat. I would love to see them go if it were up to me.
