Biggest mistake I ever made in my gun trading/ gun selling life was to part with a Savage Model 99 in 7mm-08. That was 20 years ago and I regret it every deer season.

Any cartridge with a groove diameter of .257 to .284 and case capacity from that of the .250 Savage up to the 7 x 57 mm are excellent choices for Texas whitetail.

I always get teased when I use my 8mm Mauser. People think I'm crazy when I tell then I shoot a 200 grain bullet, but that's the most accurate since it was designed for that weight.

X40 7mm/08 remmy vls even shoots 160 speers I was really shocked W 760. 120-140 varget, 150 4350, 145 speer rl19, all bullets are usually under .75@ 100m. And it really kills. was a big fan of the .270 This caliber really change things The sweed shoots and kills too. 6.5 cloves them, Kongsburg 393 22" barrel. One hole groups.

There are 2 of us that use 8mm Mauser out of 8 that hunt together. Took a bunch of crap for it until they saw what my 175 grain loads do to hogs.

Sorry for draggin up an older (but not old) thread...but just found it.
I have been on the hunt for a 7mm-08, because I want to try one out. What I use right now, is a .308, 30-30, and .243...depending on where I am, and how far I expect to shoot. Most of the hunting I do is for hogs. I use the .308 for 100+ yard hunts, and 30-30 for short range work.
The .243 is very accurate, but I don't want to go chasing after a deer or hog for 100s of yards (I am a DV). I load my own ammo for the .308, and shoot sierra HPBT. Almost everything I shoot is DRT. As I said...almost.
background: Last time out on a hunt with the kid, the guys that dropped us off at the blind said there were 3 does in the area. As we sat waiting on hogs, they came in from behind. I turn around and shot out the back of the blind, odd position for a shot. After the recoil, bring the gun back onto them, and all still standing...??? (deer are stupid) Looked and saw some red on one of their stomachs. Thought I pulled the shot. Felt bad and wanted to put it down, so shot again through some brush. It came around to the front of the brush, and I shot again, and it dropped. At this time I am thinking I knocked my scope off or something. Climbed down and went to the deer, and first shot was right where I put it. Went in behind the shoulder, looked like the HP jacket deflected off a rib or something, and came out its stomach, slicing it open. Shot 2 and 3 where a little high, and a little low, but all hits.
Again, this is with a .308. My point...after this hunt, I don't use the .243 for hunting. I would for hogs, because I would not feel too bad about one running off into the woods and dying. But not for deer. I like the .243 because of my allergy to recoil and for the kids. Hence why I wanted to try a 7mm-08 (figured the kids would like it). All three based on the same cartridge, and the 7mm being in the middle, I wanted to give it a try.
.308 is a good cartridge, and I would highly recommend it. Especially if you reload. You can make it a good round for the kids (my kid shoots a .308 too. Her load is a bit lighter than mine).
I feel you have done the right thing with a 7mm-08, and don't think I would go backwards from there.
As to the 30-06...the difference in ballistics on target between a 30-06 and a .308 are very minor (about 5% difference in energy on target), yet a .308 has 20% less recoil than a 30-06. A .308 will never be a 30-06, but if buying new, it would be a mistake to buy a 30-06 over a .308 in my opinion. A 30-06 is a good round, and always was, but to be able to put the same energy on target with a short action rifle and 20% less recoil...its a no brainer for me. .308...

Sean I thin the 7-08 is a great round for many of us. I also killed a doe this year with a HPBT in a .308. Due to many stories like yours I have switched to the hornady A-Max. It gives just as good of accuracy as the HPBT match bullet and has a little better on game performance. Give it a try next time you are buying reloading supplies.
By the way, I park my .308 and grab the wife's 7-08 every time she is not looking.

Dropped a 165lb hog tonight with my Remmy XCR in 7-08. Hit him behind the right eye with a 140gr Nosler , didn't waste any meat.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Sean You better redo your math if you think there is 20% difference in recoil.

. . . . . You shoot a bullet not designed for deer, you shouldn't be surprised if you have bullet failure. Use a deer bullet. The jacket may not be as uniform as a SMK, but it is tougher and will handle bone better. The differences between 6mm, 7mm, 7.6mm using the same case are minimal on shooting a thin skinned animal at less than 200 yards.

By the way, I park my .308 and grab the wife's 7-08 every time she is not looking. I used the Amax this year after trying it on pigs and performance was very similar to BT style hunting bullets. Some exited, some didn't all animals died within of 10ft of the bullet impact. The impacts that were a bit closer 150 and under were the less reliable on exits outside of that exits were nice all the way to 400. This all with the 7mm 162gr Amax.
