Did you eat or release them? release them? Uh....Id hope all us Texans know thats a NO NO in Texas. Save our lakes and dont do that. Besides its against the law. No regulation for releasing a gar, even an alligator gar back into the waters it was caught from makes it illegal in Texas. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/regulations/fish_hunt/fish/freshwater_limits.phtml

ALL of my alligator gar are released alive , I dont know who informed you that releasing them was illegal but they are wrong , also they are the top predator in the water here and live to be over 80 yrs old , so why would you want to kill one , and routinely get over 150 lbs and I catch lots of fish from 150 lbs to over 200 lbs

Nothing wrong with keeping one for dinner but the best to keep are half that size anyway...
Awsome fish and bet it was a fun time!
The 2nd one has some good color!

Nice gars, here is a 136# 6'5" we caught on a jug line a few months ago even one this big made for some great eating, caught on cut carp. The look on my wife's face was priceless when she grabbed the jug and took slack out of it, then it flew out of her hand skimming across the water. He had swallowed the bait deep. Then upon closer inspection, he had a piece of staging coming out of his rear, guess he broke off of someones trot line. We fried some of his backstrap, talk about good! This was the first one we caught on jug lines.

Just found what that guy was prob thinking about...
Lawful Archery Equipment (includes longbow, recurved bow, compound bow and crossbow): May be used to take NONGAME fish only. Any fish that is edible or can be used for bait (includes all gar species, common carp, and buffalo) may not be released back into the water after being taken with lawful archery equipment. See Waste of Fish.
He probably thought you shot them and then turned them loose.

I latched on to one of those monsters in Copano Bay one time. What a FIGHT!! I was a little disappointed, I admit, at first I thought I was on a big bull red.

Not only can you release one if caught on rod and reel but you can only keep one whether on rod and reel or bow.

Someone needs to brush up on the fishing laws. I guess so. It has been awhile since Ive messed with those things. I used to bow fish way back in the day but it grew old. Guess its just one of those old myths then huh. Either way, I wouldnt want ot let those nasty things back in the water. Nothing good comes from those suckers. ANd no Navasot. I have no reason to feel the need to change my name or hide from anytyhing. Im a born and raised Texan Have lived here all my life. We all make mistakes once in awhile. I was confused about an old outdated law im sure we could all use a little brushing up on things we dont think about every day. Im sure you have never been wrong before though?
