We are about to start building a new skinning rack and was interested in seeing a few of y'alls for some ideas. The concrete slab is already in place and big enough that we could fit four deer on there at a time if needed.

I'm thinking about two 12' crossbars on A-frames as a start. Do you think 12' is too tall/too short? What size pipe do we need? Any help would be appreciated.

I would much rather make it too tall than too short if there is a such thing as too tall. I have built 2 of them and ended up going back and making both of them taller.

I agree on the taller than shorter.

Another side not we made ours at home and trailered it to the ranch... well it was over 16' tall counting the 4' that got cemented in the ground and it was about 13-14 foot wide.... Building it at home was a mistake but we didn't have a welder at the ranch. I drove that thing on our regular 16' flatbed from San Antonio to Hebronville... you talk about a 200 mile trip of hoping you never see another car! I left the house at 11:30pm and we made it without confrontation with the law woot

I am thinking we are going to have to do the same thing. Good news is I am only 15 miles from the build site and it is mostly FM roads.

How did you guys do your joints to attach the A-frame to the crossbar?

Just cut a pipe saddle into the tops of the supports and weld to the crossbar, or is there some kind of fitting that would work?

I am thinking about doing a skinning rack, too, and I like the pipe a-frame idea, but I am not sure how to do the joints...
(and I dont have a welder or a torch at the moment!)

On ours we have 2 upright posts with a cross bar, we saddled the 2 uprights and welded the cross bar in. At the bottom each side has pretty much an H-brase like you would see on a fence for stability. Its made out of 2-3/8's oil field pipe. We drilled a hole in the middle of the crossbar and put and eyebolt with a pulley and one of the legs has a winch on the side.

Ours only hangs 1 critter at a time, it functions well for us.

we have a similar set up as mentioned above. something to consider is welding F/M threaded fitting on top and support bars and threading legs in once you reach destination. Possibly a bolted connection as well.

We made this a couple of years ago. It works great!

If you want some friendly advice, get a haircut and take a bath. You wouldn't get hassled so much.

2" pipe for the legs and 2-1/2" for the top. The 2" will slidw inside the 2.5" and allow a easy break down and put up. Drill holes through and use bolts to hold it all in place. This is how my cleaning racks and feeders are all built and allways will be. a little hard to find 2.5" at times but I bought one stick (22') and still have a little left over for the nexy one I build. Works like a champ.

For those who don't weld - Heavy, old school playground swing set. Remove swings, add pulleys and winch. Works great
