SHOOTER STAGE The hunter talks about satisfaction with hunting being closely tied to being able to “get shooting.” Often the beginning duck hunter will relate he had an excellent day if he got in a lot of shooting. The beginning deer hunter will talk about the number of shooting opportunities. Missing game means little to hunters in this phase. A beginning hunter wants to pull the trigger and test the capability of his firearm. A hunter in this stage may be a dangerous hunting partner. LIMITING OUT STAGE A hunter still talks about satisfaction gained from shooting. But what seems more important is measuring success through the killing of game and the number of birds or animals shot. Limiting out, or filling a tag, is the absolute measure. Do not let your desire to limit out be stronger than the need for safe behavior at all times. TROPHY STAGE Satisfaction is described in terms of selectivity of game. A duck hunter might take only greenheads. A deer hunter looks for one special deer. A hunter might travel far to find a real trophy animal. Shooting opportunity and skills become less important. METHOD STAGE This hunter has all the special equipment. Hunting has become one of the most important things in his life. Satisfaction comes from the method that enables the hunter to take game. Taking game is important, but second to how it is taken. This hunter will study long and hard how best to pick a blind site, lay out decoys, and call in waterfowl. A deer hunter will go one on one with a white-tailed deer, studying sign, tracking, and the life habits of the deer. Often, the hunter will handicap himself by hunting only with black powder firearms or bow and arrow. Bagging game, or limiting, still is understood as being a necessary part of the hunt during this phase. SPORTSMAN STAGE As a hunter ages and after many years of hunting, he “mellows out.” Satisfaction now can be found in the total hunting experience. Being in the field, enjoying the company of friends and family, and seeing nature outweigh the need for taking game. Not all hunters go through all the stages, or go through them in that particular order. It is also possible for hunters who pursue several species of game to be in different stages with regard to each species. Some hunters feel that role models of good sportsmen, training, or reading books or magazines helped them pass more quickly through some stages.

This is me to a tee.

Pretty sure I'm in all the stages.
Sure, if a spot is likely to have greenheads, I'll pass on gadwall etc for a couple hours.
It just depends on who I'm with and what I'm expecting from that hunt. I like taking new people hunting and I like the cadillac drive up and toss out a couple decoys and let the teal swarm in but, I like trudging through the swamp to get to the X and limit out just as much.
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

Depends on how I wake up in the morning. Mostly Sportsman Stage though. I like limiting out, I like shooting trophy's, and I like doing it anyway possible. Most of all I enjoy hunting and if I don't succeed at any of the three listed above I will still be out there the next morning.

I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

I'm all about the method. Limiting is still important to me and I'm always after my next trophy for the wall.
But I REALLY enjoy planning a hunt and researching the weather, time of year, decoy strategies, etc... for weeks before a hunt. I've become very familiar with the waterfowl migration maps over the last couple of years, and studying when new birds come in with fronts, etc. It is all so interesting to me. Like clockwork every year...

Method driven trophy hunter that still likes to kill, cripple, and mame! Planning the 80 mile ocean run to check the last bird off the "self guided" list. After a yrs worth of planning, painting decs, shipping a boat, and 100s of hours on the phone philosophizing on how to get there and get it done.

Method. I still get doses of all the different stages depending on the situation. I would say I do love to think and plan out a hunt to the extreme.
OMG, this is the best slumber party ever!

I picked shooting stage because I think most of you are liars, and skewed the results towards method/trophy/sportsman.

Sir are you saying that people on this forum would ever pretend to be the model duck hunters.......I don't believe that I think they all only shoot drakes with their feet down at 10 yards over the dekes I am at this stage

Trophy stage on most hunts! But is the birds just aren't doing their thing, I turn into limiting out stage. This puts hens, divers, spooines all at risk of getting too close

There has to be more stages from which to choose. I go through all of these stages in a season. Geographics play a big role as well as who I am hunting with. My point, the last weekend was just me, my wife and Moderno at the coast. We let her do the shooting, it was without a doubt more kewl to show her the pattern on the water in an aid to help her understand leading of the birds. Even kewler than that was to watch her pummel her first bird in a long time. Her being charged about duck hunting was way more important than shooting a duck. So I didn't vote myself into a catagory.

My stage isn't included.
I hunt only for the sake of the dawgs so they can do that one thing in their life that they train and hope for nine months out of the year. I would have stopped hunting 20+ years ago if it wasn't for the love of my dawgs and being able to see them fulfill their genetic destiny.

They just go hunting to enjoy nature and be in company of friends and family. Yet they come on the interwebs and bash people for asking for help on a specific lake, make fun of newbies, barneys, and topwaters, and kill every snake they see because they cant ID diamondback water snake from a timber rattler. RIIIIIIGHT.
