There isn't an "electronic locking device" on most safes; the electronic keypad will trip the pin and if it fails the key manually can do the same action... at least on the elecronic safes i've had (liberty)

I got mine at Academy.. cant remember the brand... funny since I see it in my closet everyday... anyway it came with a skeleton key and it opens it.. I tried it when I first got it..... Now if I could just remember where I put it if I ever need it.
And dumb question, have u tried ratteling the handle before entering combo?

Coot, I just changed my battery on mine and wound up locking myself out. Turns out the keypad defaulted back to the ORIGINAL FACTORY SETTING. This number was on the papers the safe came with. Luckily, I had those in a filing cabinet. If you are going to buy a safe with a key pad, make sure it will open with key also.

Mine doesn't have a backup key hole of any kind. The only hole in the whole safe is a 1/4 or so in diameter hole behind the keypad that the wire goes in. I laid it on its back carefully yesterday and hit it gently on the door all over while trying all different ways to unlock it. I even pryed on the door anywhere I could while trying the keypad to open it. It's still not open I'm calling Winchester back tomorrow for another gripe session!

Winchester said it was recognizing my combination and nothing is wrong with the keypad. But then again I was talking to a lady that sounded like she was reading a script.

If you can fish the wires out of the back of the key pad, energize the wires going into the safe with a new 9v battery. Just stick one end to each post on the battery. If it has the plug on the end of the wire stick a small wire into each hole in the plug and then touch to battery. That will trigger the solenoid on the latch mechanism inside and it should open. If that doesn't work something has come apart or jammed in the latch mechanism inside the door I'm afraid.

Coot - you should be recording some of this for a You-tube video. Write down the dates and times you call(ed) Winchester, and the name of person you spoke with. Present FACTS only. Let winchester know (after) that you have the video made and ready to post; They might quickly re-think the whole thing (in so far as taking care of you!).

Do you know anyone with one of those small fiber optic inspection cameras? Stick it in the hole and have a look/see..... Good Luck!

I was just reading a thread on another site. A tech from one of the keypad companies suggested brand new, fresh, from the store batteries. He said the keypads are very sensative to voltage and even tiny drop won't activate it.

don't you have a backup physical key? X2 There isn't one on this model. The batteries I've been trying are fresh out of the store. I called Winchester back and they were no help at all if the safe is a day older than a year the are not willing to help at all. She said the locking mechanism is all in one little black box inside the door. I called several locksmiths, because Winchester couldn't recommend one; the only one I've found so far that will mess with it said there is no guaranty that the save will be any good when they get done with it. Winchester claims this is a rare problem that the only problems they normally have are battery issues. I'm gonna go buy a few more batteries and try them out.

Buy a liberty next time, and if i buy a safe, it will be electronic. combos take way too long to gain access.

See if you can find any manufacturer identifying marks on the keypad itself. It's most likely made by somebody besides winchester. Call that company, and get one of their techs to help you.

Can't you just get Winchester to send you another keypad? would not do him any good...needs to be installed from the outside and secured inside. just upgraded one of mine.
I am still looking for the perfect apron, one with reinforced knee areas would be perfect.

I'm afraid if I pop the plug off the circuit board I'll break it ( I don't know why I'm afraid the POS won't open) but if that worked wouldn't I be able to open any safe like that one?

What not to buy! The LG keypad that is supposedly fine. The key pad does come off but that's it, that's how you change the battery. I guess I can strip the wires and put a meter on them and see how much battery is sent to the locking mech. when I enter the code.

it isnt that part. its attached to the solenoid that allows the handle to turn...maybe as mentioned...cut the wires and pop it with a station master til it opens...or just keep entering the code(which is same thing but takes longer) til it pops.

I've got 4 wires. I've got a red, black, yellow and a green. Any suggestions on which one to put power to.
