My dads birthday is coming up and I decided to try making one of these for him. I will update pictures and details as I finish each step.

Picked them up in Frisco:

Testing out the finish color I am going to use:

Starting the sanding process (100grit): (Wont be sanding the next one by hand!)

Finished sanding, Starting to fill with water to swell and check for leaks.

A few minor leaks but nothing some soaking wont cure. (Wet the barrel down and its looking much better than I had hoped)

I will let it soak for two days until im off work again. I will drain it and do a final sanding with 120grit. Drill out and screw in all of the staves. I will update when I finish, thanks for looking. Any tips would be appreciated.

I've never seen a smoker made from those. That's really cool and I'm looking forward to seeing the final product.

Thank you guys. The cost of the barrels will very greatly depending on where you find them. Usually between 100 200. I found a winery in Frisco that was selling them for 110 each ( a post here led me to). I would just call your local wineries and check Craigslist.

The barrel has been soaking for about 24 hrs now and is leak free. time to start drilling the bands to screw into the staves.

I did the sanding and cleaning on the outside in a day. Will soak it while working. I should be able to do the stain in a day, let it dry overnight. Run screws in all of the staves and fix up the racks and fire basket in another day. That's about two weekends I have planned for it... I will do more today and let u know how its coming along. (I don't know about you but my projects never turn out as easy as they look/sound at first) My dads birthday isn't until the 25th so I have a bit of OOPS room.

Keep us updated. My Wife wanted a couple of those (cut in half) to be used as planters. At $110 each I think not.

Looks good. wouldn't worry too much about it being leakproof. once you start smoking the wood will start to shrink and there will be cracks. I've made several of these in the past and the best advice i could give is drill each stave to the metal ring, so they wont come loose in few months. Holler at me if you have any questions.

Will do. I plan on having it refilled between smoking so the wood will stay tight.

Pittdog sent me a PM on his info.

Ok, I drilled pilot holes (being careful not to drill too far into the wood) just under the size of the screw head so they would sit flat. I made my cut using the band as a guide as many others have said and it worked great. You can see in the photos below I had some trouble starting the hole for the jig saw. I would probably figure out something different in that area next time.

QUESTION: How do you add the wood when needed? I have seen some with a door cut in them and some without.
TIP: If your going to polish the metal bands I would do it before drilling or placing the screws.
TIP: I used a 20 TPI jig saw blade and it made the cut just fine with no splintering.

This is the top after stain.

This is after the screws, cut and stain were complete.

Whatever this is was inside my barrel. (probably make good wood for smoking. Its soaked in wine.

Sorry it took so long but I have been busy at work. I have my father the smoker for his birthday and he took it home and used it on Easter. He said it held at about 170 - 200 for 5 hours with a small fire. I ended up using all stainless steel bolts as well as all Brinkman insides that way it would be easy to replace if ever needed.

Let me know what you think!

I have been considering building one of these! I have a few questions if you dont mind.

1. What length of bolts do you use to hold the grates?
2.What size are the grates and wear did you purcahse them?
3. How do you add wood if needed while you are cooking?
4. Do you have to leave hole where the cork was or can you place your temp gauage there?

Thanks for information.

1. I used 4" Stainless Steel bolts.(This will depend on what size rack you use and where you end up placing them.)
2. The racks are all for 22.5" grill and you can get them from Academy or Home Depot.
3. My father built a small fire in his on easter and he kept temperature for 5hrs. I think if you built a good size fire you should be able to hold temperature for plenty of time.
4.I dont think I would place the temp gauage there. You would want it closer to the food area to get a more accurate reading IMO. (We actually used a log of pecan and ground it down to look like a cork for the bung hole.) IT really is called a bung hole by the way.

I also used all stainless steel on anything that is exposed to the inside of the barrel for food safety reasons. No galvanized or zinc. It's a bit more expensive but worth it IMO.

I just spoke with my father about his smoker and he forgot to keep a bit of water in the barrel while smoking and his fire pan scorched the bottom of his barrel. DON'T FORGET: Keep about 2" of water in your barrel.

I just posted a Wine Barrel up for sale on the NON HUNTING classifieds. I just haven't had time to mess with it and thought someone else could get some use from it before I would.
