I wear ear muffs. When deer and turkey hunting, I just put them on before the shot.

Second part of my question...if you wear ear plugs, how long have you been hunting?
You put them in before you kill a deer? Just curious b/c I have never tried that. Seems to be something that would hinder my shot opportunity. Maybe not I guess.

After shooting alot last dove season, I believe I will try to wear at least 1 in my right ear. I would always come back with a headache after shooting. As for just out hunting in general, dont wear them unless Im sighting in a bigger gun(mulitiple shots).

I been shooting a lot over the last 5 years (clay, dove and duck), before that not much at all, growing up in the 70s I shot quite bit of clay and dove.
But I use to never wear ear plugs, never even knew about them. And every now and then I would ring my ear good, it would ring for an hour or so, then go away. Then it was about 1987 or 88, I was shooting sporting clay in England, this person was infront of me to my right a little, one shot rung my ear good, and the ringing has never stopped. I have gotten use to it over the years and learned to live with it.
But I wear plugs all the time now, so does my son. They got really nice plugs I want to get, it is open all the way, but when there is compression from a shot, the ear plug blocks all the way, that is what I want to get.
But I would say always wear ear plugs, why take the risk? All it takes is one shot to get you good, it is called tinnitus when you get it, Im considered to have a mild case of it, some folks have it so bad it drives them crazy.

Been hunting for about 15 years, I guess, and I wear ear plugs in the field when I can. I use the kind that are tethered, worn around my neck, and if I have time I put them in before I take a shot.
When I'm at the target range, I wear earplugs and ear muffs over them.
There'll always be stuff to shoot at, but I can't get another pair of ears.

I've been shooting guns for over 45 years and have never, faithfully, worn ear plugs. Could be a bad thing, just never considered it mandatory. I hate the durn things... Before somebody rakes me over the coals - yes, I know I should wear them, okay!

Do you have hunters ear/ringing? I got it after a single hunt in 1994. I shot about 200 12 ga rounds. It hast gone away since so I make every attempt to wear a single plug while duck hunting and the muffs for everything else. When in the blind, I put them on as soon as I see movement. Never missed anything because of it. What is hard is while driving around for hogs. Sometimes they don't make them on but I try or my ear will really ring like crazy.

Not really. Back in '79 I was working construction around a pressure vessel that blew. I was about 100 yards away, but still it busted my ear drums. Took awhile to get over that. Every now and then, I get a little ringing, but it doesn't last long.

I use plugs at the range, and nothing at the stand. In my 22 years afield i still have yet to develope any permanenet hearing loss, or ringing that wont go away. However, i hunt from a box blind primarily, which puts the soarce of the damage outside the box. The only time i have issues is when im out walking and jump a squirrel, and take a shot at it with my .22 revolver. Then your talkin some serous ringage.Sk

I been hunting for 18 years and I have never worn ear plugs, unless I'm sighting in a rifle, or target shooting.

I have been hunting and shooting for over 40 years, and the only time I wear ear plugs or shooting glasses is at a Public Range, because most if not all of them require it.
To me, and this is just personal observation, the only time I have a problem when not wearing plugs is when shooting revolvers, and in my opinion 357 mags are the worst of the lot as far as muzzle blast goes.
Out hunting, if I am shooting shotgun or rifle I pay no attention to the report of the gun, if I am with some one and they are shooting, I try to stand directly behind them a few feet, or back and off to the side opposite from the direction they are shooting.
