I am starting to understand why there are so many misses and lost deer...just don't think bows are meant to shoot 60-100 yards and have a hard time believing most folks practice enough to be proficient enough to consistently hit a spot at that distance.

Bow hunting at close distances is critical enough, there are just too many outside factors at those distance IMHO.

not to mention, if you can shoot 50 yards is one thing, but if yer bow sounds like a train coming the deer will "jump/duck" the string.

Just one instance of hitting a game animal in a non vital area is too many times. I have done so as an impatient young man and have realized that my overzealousness is inappropriate and unethical. There is no correct max range. I can speculate on what I believe it is but we each have our own and if you dont know what it is you should never test it on a living target. I have archery hunted now for over 50 years and have taken over 20 deer with my bow. Personally I will not take a shot over 20 yards and I mark this distance at each stand. A clean kill with the least suffering should always be your objective.

thanks for the comments, I think I will stay on the conservative end of the spectrum. 30 Yards or less will be my goal

I think in the end there is no across the board ethical limit. You need to look at yourself and decide. Most places in Texas you can bring them in to 25 or less so why risk a farther shot. At the same time, I have family in northern cali(i try not to admit that to often) and they routinely practice and shoot game (mostly blacktail and muley) at 80-100 yards. I thought they were crazy at first, but I watched them practice and they are good at it. But they can't use feeders and mostly they spot/stalk so its hard to get a 25 yard shot. In the end you have to decide if your good enough for a 30+ yard shot with whatever conditions and make the ethical choice from there.

Just depends on you and how good you can hit your target in all conditions, my far pin is set a 35yds. I wouldn't go no farther becasue thats what Im comfortable with and know I can hit my spot up to that distance.
