I dunno if it's "the best", but there I was in Alpine, late morning, after leaving Terlingua (rock-hounding), and I found a very friendly donut shop just off the main drag, not far from the Holland Hotel. The shop was full of customers, most of whom greeted each other as old friends. And the donuts hit the spot (mine).
