Ended with 8 between 2 guys at the creek, not bad for warm, southwind, only 1 gun to share...

Ended the morning with two Widgeon drakes. The bluebird, calm skies made for a pretty sunrise, but tough conditions where I was hunting. Yesterday the weather report for today showed 15-18mph south winds. I scouted an area that would have been great for those conditions. Well, when I looked at the weather at 5am, it showed 4-7 mph winds.

The birds were just rafting up in the middle of the lake, enjoying the glassy water.

Sling all the time. If you're solo, that's safer than leaving gun on the bank where the dog might accidentally fire it. Don't laugh, happens all the time.

My dog snores.

^^^^ ??? If the dog has enough dexterity to flip off the safety and fire the gun I want it! Ill teach it to type and answer the phone for me at work. Probably better to make sure the gun is in a safe spot, pointed in a safe direction and action open or safety on.

you would be surprised how many accidents there are from dogs stepping on shotguns while the owner crosses the fence or such.

Yep! I know a guy that has birdshot in his arse from that samething happening.

He shot a quail that went down on the other side of a fence, leaned his gun on the wire (safety off I guess), told the dog to stay due to the cactus where the bird feel. He crossed went to the bird and his hyper gsp shot him. He said if it wasn't for a cedar between him and the gun it would have been really bad.

Went out again this morning and got on the birds a little better by working our way around to some open water areas closer to the main lake. We had birds early and could have come away with a mallard drake and possibly 3 teal but we just seemed to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time to shoot every time and even though they were plenty close it was a speed shot or nothing. I brought all my gear home and cleaned it up to put away till next season. About to break out the trotlines in the duck woods, as soon as duck boat traffic stops. Time for some cajun fried channel cat, crispy french frys, and hush puppys......
I have the gun shoulder harness but the areas I hunt are loaded with trip hazzards. The place we hit this morning was clean so when we took up the spread we did carry our shotguns, but naturally no birds show up.
