I own Rugers, Remingtons, Savages, and 1 Weatherby. Each different and unique. All shoot 3/4 inch groups at 100 yds. Triggers may be the biggest difference for me.

Chevy vs. Ford anyone? It is amazing to see someone have a problem with one gun and declare them all bad. I am with rockin, all of my Rugers, Remingtons, Winchesters, etc shoot well.

I agree with the gun shop, just personnal opinion of course X2 I have seen a few of the 700's malfunction right out of the box, including one memorable instance when a ranch hands brand new .300win Rem 700 blew a hole in the roof of the gunshop where he bought it; when the store owner for some reason called B.S. on it malfuntioning. I'm calling BS on that story. Who loaded the rifle while it was in the shop? Call BS all you want HWYMAN I personally saw that rifle malfunction when he was trying to sight it in and that was the second new out of the box 700 I have seen screw up. The store owner believe it or not was the one who popped a live round in the chamber... it happened in Caddo Oklahoma at "Backwoods outdoors"(I believe was the stores name, there are 2 in the town) They called remington on the spot and they didnt want to do anything about it until they put one of the local cops on the phone who was eating at the cafe 3 doors down....He got on the phone and expressed his opinion about the situation..... Remington then overnighted a refund check for the rifle! Another took place in sherman Texas when I was a senior in high school when my buddy kyle got a new 700 7mm mag instead of a class ring for his graduation gift New remington 700 straight out of the box with a box Corelokt...he fired a few rounds sighting it in and complained of his eye hurting; so I try the rifle and it hurt my eye too and I knew it wasnt the scope hitting me. Then we looked at the empty casings....THEY ALL HAD PRIMERS BLOWN SMOOTH OUT OF THEM! I think it was pieces of the primers flying out of the action that were hitting us. This was witnessed by myself and kyle of course along with cody, rusty and john all shaking their heads and wondering WTF? He took it to the local gunsmith and he said the head space was so screwed up that he couldnt believe the rifle made it past quality control.

And yes I own both....the Ranch hand decided on a Remington after seeing how accurate my 700 sendero 300wby was.
Does remington make good guns... yes! but I do think their quality control has gone down hill.

I'd call a few more shops and see what they think.
Why would you call the shops? They are going to tell you to buy whatever they want to sell, including Rems. I'd ask the guys that are buying em and shooting how good or bad they are. He needs to find a new shop to deal with. I'd be surprised if other gun shops had the same opinion of Remington as the one he's dealing with. And yes, he does need to talk with the folks that own and shoot them. As for the quality of Ruger, I own a .270 and it shoots great.

That is what the bucket of sand is for that you never see.

Have a 700 ltr in .308 and absolutely love it.
That said, the ony other rifle I shoot regularly is a Marlin 30-30. Love it too.

I have owned 2 Rugers-Ruger #1 and Model 77 both in .270 and I still have the bolt action. I also own 4 Remington Model 700s in 6mm, .223, .270 and .280 and they are all great rifles. If I buy another rifle it will be a Remington.

Lots of good comments, and fans from both camps. The gun shop owner sounds like he was biased to me. Could be he gets a better discount with his ruger distributor. I have 700's and rugers, love em both,so it's just a matter of opinion. Like one poster stated: ford vs chevy even though we know fords are #1

If Toyota made rifles the discussion would be over.

Ever wonder why there are no Ruger 77 clones from the custom action folks? Almost every one of the custom bench rest actions are some form of a Remington 700 clone (Wichita comes to mind as an exception I have had). Most take 700 triggers and stocks. If you manufacture enough of anything there will be problems occasionally. How the manufacturer deals with it is where the rubber meets the road. Both Remington and Ruger are great. It is your money, buy what you want.

I got a fair collection of old tang safety Rugers, love the rifle and the smooth action but hate the triggers. With that said they will not hold up to my Remingtons when it comes to out of the box accuracy. The adjustable trigger on the 700's is where most if not all of the misfires came from, the owners were getting them down to unsafe levels and then swear they never touched them. New Rem 700's come with coating on the trigger screw that show if a trigger has ever been tampered with or adjusted.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Remmington 700 for me. I think browning abolt and winchester model 70 are both better than ruger.

Been many a critter bite the dust from my 700 7mag. The last being a hog from 144 yards right between the eyes. I'd say its a shooter.
I don't smoke ,so I can't say but I highly doubt it. I do know a loud fart works! I think they like the smell plus I guess they think it's a buck grunt. _________________________

Only Remington gun I've heard of not being high quality is the 870 express besides that all of my rifles and shotguns have always been Remington until just recently when I shelled out some dough for a Benelli shotgun. They all work great and always have...I have a feeling that guy had something in it for him if he sold that ruger.
