This has been one of the worst years for deer hunting at my place in Central Texas. The drout killed most of the young oats and grasses that deer should feed on in fall winter plus we had a bumper Acorn crop.
I am trying anything to draw deer and turky back on to our property. Does any one have any recomondations?

Not much will grow without rain. Are you wanting spring plot or next fall info?

How many acres to plant total for each season? Is it decent soil? Will livestock have access? How many deer will use it? Farming equipment? Soil test done yet?

We tilled about 75 acres last spring and planted Milo, last fall tilled and planted 80 acres of oats and 20 acres of rye.

What type of soil do you have?
Have you done a soil test?
How much rainfall do you get?
What type of equipment do you have?
How much do you want to spend on seed?

We are running about 260 acres. Yes I had a soil test last year. Sprayed liquid fertilizer and weed killer in spring and dropped over 2 ton of fertilizer in the fall with the recomondations of the TX AG Office.
We try to rotate livestock across the fields, about 30 days at a time once we get a good setting of grasses.
We have not really hunted the property hard. I only allow 3 hunters.

I believe it is sandy loom, soil test last year. Rain fall was dismal last year, we were in a drout. We spent about $1500 on seed last year. We have a disk/drag harrow and no till planter.

Ahhh, never thought about soybeans. I would have to see if they are conducive to our area.

Is your 260 acres all open pasture and field? If not how much of the acreage is brush/tree covered?

We tilled about 75 acres last spring and planted Milo, last fall tilled and planted 80 acres of oats and 20 acres of rye. Plant legumes... peas, lab labs, alafala ect... more the better... early -mid March. Just get yourself a farmers almanac Note the above is assuming you dont have cattle or cattle can get to it... because it will cause them to founder

Have you thought about marijuanna? If the deer don't like it maybe at least you might find a market for it in these new pot-legal states.
All's I know, I wasted about $100 bucks on deer plot seed only to find out it is allergic to growing in edwards county.

A buddy of mine took a pic of a pot field from the air one time and when he emailed me the pic, there were about 50 deer in there munching away all over the field. He didn't even notice (not being a hunter) until I pointed it out.

John H; Looking at that photo, could you notice if all those deer were maybe "High" Fenced?

The deer would almost wipe out their crops and they spotlighted them brutally. Did not go over well.

We have 1 large tank and a seasonal creek. About 100 acres is cleared and pasture, the remaining 80 acres if between thick and brushy.
The soil is sandy loom, soil test last year. Rain fall was dismal last year, we were in a drout. We spent about $1500 on seed last year. We have a disk/drag harrow and no till planter.
We plant legumes a years ago and nothing grew, peas ???, lab labs ???, alafala - our soil is not conducive to alafala. We usually try to plant in early - mid March, and mid to late Aug.

You may be planting to early in the spring. Ground temps and night temps need to be a warm enough to promote fast growth. You may be planting to early in the spring and plants might have froze. If you are planting in Aug it is way to early. To hot to grow small grains yet. Mid Sept is much better. When I was in Kendall County I planted spring plots first week of April and had great success with cowpeas/beans. I planted fall plots oats/clover/turnips in mid Sept and they always did well. How much brush/cover is surrounding you to draw deer from? Lab Lab, cowpeas, clovers, and alfalfa will grow. Any clover or alfalfa will have to be reseeded each year.
