If we know who shot it, that person gets it. Otherwise, it goes to a coin flip.
And just a heads up for you guys talking about breaking legs...
If you are field hunting for geese, just slip your boot lace between the leg and band, then pull. It pops right off. For this reason, I wear lace up wading boots. Thats where all the bands Ive been shooting for the last 8 years went.....

If you build it, they will come

I guided for years. 90% of the time, the group knows who shot it. The band should go to the hunter. Sadly, I have known some greedy guides with pliers in the pocket.

Hunted Saskatchewan this year. Had 120 snows down along with a mess of ducks 3 days in a row. Had 3 bands in that mess of birds. We drew straws on 2 and I flipped on one because we were the only two that shot at that bird. Lost all bands but satisfied on how we did it. You do not know in a gang shoot all the time. You may know you crunched the bird but someone else shooting at it may think they hit it also.

Pick up the bird, break the leg, pull the band off, don't say a word. It's simple.. I have known that to happen. I even got a call after we shot 4 banded snows. I left and the outfitter called me madder than a wet hen. He thought I took the bands when they weren't looking. I kept telling him, "that aint my style". His workers finally gave up the ghost and said they were pulling a fast one on him. I would have laughed and hung up. I was just joking, the band should go to the person who shot the bird. Been duck hunting for 10 years and no bands... Guess I'm not that lucky!

I guess I am a little to old fashion for most on this forum. I was taught that first dibs goes to the land owner....along with the meat. Every hunt my dad brought me on as a kid, we always went by and talked to the landowner the night before and always went by to show them our bounty. And, he always asked them if they wanted any. They ALWAYS got the first choice.
It isn't any wonder why I have access to thousands and thousands of acres to hunt back home. I even get calls from some of the farmers every once in a while to let me know if they see a big buck or geese in their fields.
I had a guy on this forum send me an unsolicited email talking about he is "winning". He informed me that he got more out of his friends that he gave. You will have a lot more good stuff come your way if you just go along your life with the attitude that you "gave" more than you recieved. I have free access to several good hunting spots in Collin, Denton, Grayson and Fannin counties because of this attitude/way of life.
I am not trying to brag here. I am just trying to set a good example to some of the younger guys/gals on here. I always hear stories of people looking for a handout and fewer stories about how the GAVE a handup.

Had a guy I used to hunt with...he would take me to places when I had none he would say if we shoot a banded bird on this hunt it's mine. I though it was a dick move and I would never say that to anyone that I ever took on a hunt except him. There was not much I could really say though...I wanted to just hunt more than have a random chance at getting a band so I played along...we never shot a banded bird but we did shoot a done of ducks and geese. Taylor is trolling...no way a guide that wants tips pr repeat business is going to fuss over a band. I think most guys could work it out. Of course I've been hunting with one guy cough cough Bill...who claims he shot dang near every bird that comes into our spread. Not sure what happens when you have one of those guys in your blind
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

Pittstate...that makes sense if you are hunting a place for free! If you pay to play then no they get money and I pay to keep the birds. But yeah that's a good outlook. Me and my dad used to hunt a place and we would try to talk to the owner and offer him our birds....he would sometimes take a few but I'm not sure if he really wanted them or if he was being nice.

Marcstar, I 100% agree. If I pay to hunt, then it is mine...even if the guide thinks he shot it. I paid, I get. No exceptions!

And, if you pay me to hunt on my place, I would give you the band. However, I don't ask people to pay. It is by special invite only.

Pick up the bird, break the leg, pull the band off, don't say a word. It's simple.. Well that explains all the one-legged ducks I shoot. Dammit Taylor!!!!!

No one in our group gives a hoot about a band. It is usually pretty obvious who shot it. Bands are nice to have, but at the end of the day its the luck of the draw. I cant imagine why a guide or anyone for that matter would go through the extra effort to steal a band. Does it mean you are a 'better hunter' or something?

I think most guys could work it out. Of course I've been hunting with one guy cough cough Bill...who claims he shot dang near every bird that comes into our spread. Not sure what happens when you have one of those guys in your blind Hey, that was just the one teal hunt, ain't my fault every bird thought mu end was the way out. Hehehe. They were wrong. I've been lucky, seen several bands killed, and each of them was obvious who shot it. 4 of them only one person shot, one was a boom-boom situation between my dad and I (he beat me by a split second), and another one I slammed a bird after my buddy clean missed.
