Got to my tree one cold full moon pre dwan in bow season. Laid the bow down and started to prep my tree climber. Heard what sounded like a motor less tank comming at me. Ground rumbling branches snapping. Found myself surrounded by 20 or so in a semi circle. I could see their breath in the cold air and full moon. I slowly slid climber in front of me to use as a sheild. Read a story where a guy had to do that. They stood there a few minutes but felt like 20. One grunted and they all scampered down the same narrow trail I had come in on. I was as happy as a clam when I got it that tree.

Didn't any of you use a Jedi Mind Meld? I hear according to the president it works.
Never been surrounded by critters and only once had a snake fall on me (but it, after I jumped 10 feet up, turned out to be non-poisonous.)

Darn! These stories are making the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I can't remember anything like this but the mind is not what it used to be.
Once we have a war there is only one thing to do. It must be won. For defeat brings worse things than any that can ever happen in war. Ernest Hemingway

Many years as go, when hunting mule deer on a large ranch on the Rio Grande in West Texas, I climbed down a ridge into a box canyon and found about 30 Javalena between me and the canyon entrance. I was hunting with a .270 and also carrying a model 1911 (.45). Fortunately I didn't need to shoot and stayed close to a big mesquite tree until the Javies decided to move on. I don't know the circumstances under which they might decide to become aggressive and didn't want to find out.

Guess I need to hunt in Matt's area... where they stalk YOU! Saw lots of sign when I went to a ranch by Cooper Lake in Delta County. Paid hunt, no pigs seen day or night for two days.

I stalked a boar out in open pasture one night durring full moon with nothing but my bow... everything was going perfect until i stepped right on a durn goatweed...guess it was brighter than i had givin credit for because he turned around and looked into my soul... and he was bigger than i had thought prolly around 225. You will always know when they arnt happy cuz this sucker was sizin me up turned and faced dead on at me tossin his head up and blowin.... was a crazy 5 minutes... he was bout 50yrds from me and when he took one step in my direction i drew back... he either ran from that or how bad my pants were smelling...

I don't know the circumstances under which they might decide to become aggressive and didn't want to find out. Javalena may be smaller, but they can get nasty aggressive, and tend to defend as a pack. Dogs, especially, tend to tick them off. I've hunted hogs for decades but never had a problem with a group. Big old loner boars, yes, and sows with young, but never a pack. Most of the time they just want to get away, and that's usually only a problem if you're standing in their way. With wounded big boars, obviously, all bets are off.

Great story. The thrills of hunting. I never go hunting without my 40 for that exact reason. Lots of hogs on our place and you just never know when they want to say hello. Glad you are ok to tell the story.
