I was dove hunting on our land Friday and just before sunset heard the sound of some coyotes howling. Then we spotted what looked like a solid black coyote running from the creek across an open feild towards the ones that were howling. Is a black one rare? Anybody ever seen one? I'm new to predator hunting and have yet to bag me one.

Rare yes but not unheard of. My buddy in Ohio has killed two this year.

All mammals can have a "melanistic phase". The most well known is a black panther which is simply a melanistic panther (same species as a regular one). Here's what wikipedia has to say about melanism:

Here is a black coyote we took last year, I would show you the mount, but I tried to save money!!!!!!!! I am not picking that scab again!!!!

I killed a solid black one a couple yrs ago at Brushy Creek in Anderson Co. Buddy had it mounted.
