Below are just some of the topics discussed. If your interested, it should be available via podcast in a couple of days.
1)Studies performed on 14 ranches in different counties. Most of which are low-fence studies. 2)1 ½ year old spikes CAN grow to be average size bucks 3)Shooting of spikes will affect overall buck population and jack up the age structure of your herd. 4)Deer dispersal. The deer you shoot will be replaced by your neighbors and vice-versa.

Haha...you spike guys are too easy.
Pretty much Kroll is saying do what you like on low fence because they can't prove anything either way.

FACT - His study is more realistic than the high fence studies where deer are genetically tampered and pumped full of supplements.

LOL all you want. You don't have any facts to argue anything. This is not HF/LF debate. Below is one of the many examples that have been posted this year. This deer came off of a 4k acre low fence ranch under Dr. Kroll’s study. Turns out, he his ABOVE the average size for deer in this region. I think ANY low-fence hunter would be happy with a buck like this. I would have really liked to see what he would be at 5 1/2.
#717. Age 4 ½ years. 142” #717 as a 1 ½ yo spike.
Nope. Just tired of people like you saying that spikes can never amount to anything. Keep drinking your koolaid, and shoot whatever you want behind your fence, but don't push your BS on everyone else.

I hunt low fence by the way...and for some reason I haven't seen a spike this year or last...

I've got a total of 3 that could count as spikes on cam so far.. 2/3 are really small compared to the other yearlings.

See if Dr. Kroll disagrees with this..if you have a doe that produces spikes that stay spikes until they are at least in their 2nd season, chances are that deer will never be as good as one that is born and has 6 to 8 points from his first season on. And you will have a real problem identifying the doe the spike was out of 1 1/2 yrs later if they are low fenced and not ear tagged. Once you get a genetic problem in any herd it is almost impossible to clean it out..We have a 9 point pblm. on a ranch I cull shot for years..they just killed one 8 1/2 yrs old scored 165 w/out negatives...Took 3 yrs to do it because he was wary..How many does and bucks has he bred in 7 1/2 yrs..DD

the question to your question would be: if the heard is so well managed to get rid of unwanted genetics traits, how come they're always present. How do you go about killing out traits that are usually recessive?

Are you the Kroll PR man? You notice any thing similar to the ear tag on the last spike thread you jumped in one? A 4 1/2 mid 40's deer isn't average...if it was 6.5 you might have a point. I dont think kroll is the end all be all by any means....but if you can tell me what a spike will score when he is fully mature at 6.5....you will be the God father of deer management snd make millions

I don't see how you can determine the future size of a rack based on a first grow of antlers.. Unless you had a known quantity from the standpoint of the genetics.. even then it would not be a guarantee since other factors can determine growth.

Some areas last year had a zero fawn crop (this years 1.5yr olds) due to the drought, predators, etc. Very few deer will be spikes past 1.5yrs old.
