Years ago, back in my 20's or maybe 30's, I had waited for what seemed like forever to get to go hunting. Got off work early on Friday and drove back to my folks' house. Made it in time to hunt, but it was really cold and raining. Hey, I came to hunt, and being young and stupid, went to the woods. Had to wade a small bayou/ditch that was almost at the top of my LaCross boots. Still raining. Went to the ladder stand and sat there in the rain for an hour or so and here came a 4 point. I debated shooting him till he was maybe 150 yards out in the open, deeply plowed, and super muddy field. Raining harder now. Then...since I reminded myself that I came to hunt, I shot him. Had to wade 150 yards out and then 150 yards back in that famous Louisiana Gumbo Mud, while dragging the small buck. From there I was maybe 600 yards from the truck. Had to wade the bayou, which by now was belly button deep and "OH MY GOD COLD". Anyway...you get the picture. What WAS I thinking? Worst shot I can remember, though I did hit what I was aiming at.

My hunting bud and I cull shot several ranches for years, plus both of us used to trap, and I raised and ran hounds ect. We have had hunters w/borrowed weapons, who do not ever practice, who trust old and sometimes different ammo, who do not hold on hair the first shot, ect..Most who shoot shoulder, lung, heart shots will have to track deer. If one makes a poor neck or head shot same thing, but chances of a clean miss a better. But if one hunts and takes game long enough one will have to eventually track an animal..Even w/a good to excellent hit..sometimes they run..Don

The worst shot I ever made was actually a good shot right where I wanted to hit it. Had finished feeding and decided I'd just sit and watch one of my spots until dark and see what came in. Had several does and a couple of small buck when a 145 to 150 inch 11 point stepped out. I hit him right behind the leg and low in an effort to take out the pump, he humped up and ran to the thicket, good shot dead deer or so I though.
That day I wasn't planning on deer hunting and had my yote rifle with me a 243 Styer with the 58 grain V-Max and that was my first mistake. My second mistake was driving down to the area to quick and not giving the buck time to expire. My third and worst mistake was when I stepped out to go get. I expected to find a dead buck just a few yards into the thicket, I found him laying down about 10 yards in and he jumped up and started running to the east while my rifle was back in the truck. I looked for hours and the only blood I found was where he was laying down, I called a buddy and he brought out his dog's and we still never found it. About a year later a pulling unit hand found the skull of that buck over by a location but the cows and critters had chewed the horns down bad. It started with a good shot with the wrong bullet and just got worse with it all being my fault.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Most times it is our fault but all we can do is learn from it and try not to repeat it.

ha ha...ONE OF MY WORSE shots was the first buck I ever shot...Big Bodied 8pt...pulled the trigger, and dropped him in his tracks...I was pumped. Thinking to myself "I'm pretty damn good with this riffle. The problem was, as I approached my new trophy I noticed that I shot the deer in the neck. The Problem with this, I was aiming right behind the shoulder....OOOOPPPPS Only about a foot and a half off my MARK. I suck at this deer hunting thing

open sight 30/30 hunting outta tripod up on a hilltop during rainstorm, was quartered away, was aiming for high shoulder down through engine room, hit him square in back of the head and came out his mouth, dropped and never moved an inch. can't believe i missed the spot i was aiming for and can't believe how lucky i was the bullet hit where it did, said a prayer and thanked the Lord for my fortunate shot.....

Shot at a hog at exactly 30 yds....using the 20 yd. pin on my bow sights. Arrow and broadhead both destroyed on the rock beneath her. Felt like a knucklehead.

I had my step dads remington 700 topped with a cheap scope that was crooked. About 200 yards out a doe stepped out, and a 270 shoulder shot will drop her in her tracks. So I shot, she dropped, when I recovered her, the only blood was leaking from her head where the bullet hit. Oops

I shot an arrow at a pig at about 20 yards. Forgot to adjust my single pin which was dialed in for 30-35 yards. The arrow went so high, it hit the pig's spine and the arrow deflected straight into the air.

May of 2004 I was bow hunting Grizzly bears in the Brooks Range of northern Alaska. Its what they call the Dalton Highway Corridor, an area that runs for 200+ miles in which you cant shoot a rifle inside 5 miles of the highway, its bowhunting only. I had made a modification to my drop down rest on my bow prior to the trip and adjusted the serving on the string that attaches to my cable and activates my drop down. I shot it a bunch after making my adjustment but apparently I screwed up in the serving. After several days of glassing bears, chasing a few, and passing on some smaller ones I spot a monster for this area at about 1 am, big dark choclate colored boar who was easily wearing Pope and Young headgear.....literally. So the stalk commences, and after playing cat and mouse with this gorgeous bear for an hour or so I end up downwind of him at 52 laser ranged yards and he's quartering away from me. I didnt like the shot and convinced my buddy (and back up gunner) that we needed to get just a little bit closer. So as I try to cross a small dry creek ditch , now keep in mind neither of us are wearing our boots , we took them off to make a silent stalk so the crunchy ground wouldnt give us away. I am sneaking across the rocks all stealth like with my eyes dialed in on the bear that is feeding but facing away from us, and I slip just a little bit on some big rocks and one of the nocks on my arrows in my hip quiver hits a rock , that crisp nick sound got us busted. The bear immediately turns in our direction and busts us, he stands up on his hind legs to get a better look at us and tries to wind us but the wind is in our favor. Just to give you some insight on mountain grizzlies, this is what goes through a grizzly bears mind when they encounter a human in wild country....." Are you something I can eat"......."Are you something I need to run from?" and they make that decision pretty fast. Well as I suspected with the wind not helping him make his decision he drops back down on all fours and starts coming our way, highly alert and very methodically. I knew he was gonna circle us and try to wind us and he was coming at us on an angle to our right. I looked right and thought....if he gets behind one of those spruce trees thats when I'll draw back. Well sure as chit he heads for the spruce trees to my right and at about 15 yards as he goes behinid the first big spruce I draw back.....he clears the spruce tree I put my 20 yard pin low on his chest and as I am thinking....I got your azz!!!! I release the arrow and instead of it going to his chest where my pin is it hits rocks in front of him sparks go flying in the low light and ricochets straight up in the air! Well as I am thinking that the game of life is over my buddy steps up in front of me with the shotgun and the bear bluff charges us to about 8 yards and then all in one motion blasts away from us through the thich spruce. After a bunch of WTF just happened I nock another arrow and draw back, about the time i get the bow drawn my buddy goes dude....look at your riser, my drop down rest never came up, the arrow is laying on the riser shelf. I then realize that the string that activates my riser had slid down the cable and that was that. I have never felt sicker in my life, this was my dream bear with a bow and I literally just let him get away off my own stupidity. Here I practised for months, daily, shooting at tums tablets at 20 yards and Ive got a 500 lb grizzly in front of me at 15 yards and well.....you know the story! It will haunt me for the rest of my life! Cant tell you how many dreams about that bear I have had in the last 8 years.

I personaly know three people who have had drop aways fail on them, one froze up due to ice, another froze due to a mecanical problem and the other had the same problem as you had. While I may not be quite as accurate with my WB compared to a good drop away I've yet to encounter a problem or know anybody who has.

I missed a HUGE buck at 8 feet with a 20 gauge. He was on a full sprint running from dogs straight at me. I stood up and pulled the gun up when he was maybe 25 yards out (thought he was going to run smooth over me) and he made a hard turn at about 15 feet. Swung stright through him and shot out in front of his chest.
I can close my eyes and see him running at me, him turning, my sight picture and the barrel creeping out in front as I shoot.
I died a little that day.

You are absolutely correct, but truth be told I broke a golden rule that I have preached many times.......dont phuck with your equipment that is working just fine before a hunt. I didnt hear the end of that outcome from my buddies FOREVER!

I missed a 9 pointer when I was 18. Left the blind to stalk one I saw. Got on my knee and shot.
Blood everywhere!!! All over my face.
Damn scope eye! Looked for the deer and no blood except the blood running like crazy on my face. Got 5 stitches. Shot him the next weekend though!
