The idea of a youth stock is an excellent idea, though to me it's full advantage would be in a full size weapon like the 700. I've seen some drop in synthetic model stocks for good prices. We keep telling helo about the reduced recoil ammunition and I totally agree, the stuff is super.

308. You can use the reduced recoil rounds for women and children, as they grow, move to full powered rounds.
Savage stocks interchange, and you get a coupon with the youtrh rifles to buy an adult stock factory direct worth the money.

And they also work well for this 49-year-old who never has a need to shoot beyond 200 yards.

Might be a good idea if you have friends with these calibers to let the kid try them and see how he does with them.

Try a 25-06 or 7mm-08 before you do anything and i would HIGHLY advise a remington 700 bdl the gun i started hunting with when I was 7 was my dads remington 700 bdl 25-06 that was 35 YEARS old the round will suit him for almost any animal and will be a gun that he will probably wont out grow and would always have JMHO you will have got your moneys worth with this combo!!!

+1 on the 25-06. Good round and it doesn't kick too much for a youngster.

My first choice would be reduced loads for the 270, second would be weatherby vanguard in 243 win. They offer a package with a youth and full size stock. I know some dont like the 243 but it is plenty of gun to get the job done. My grandpa shot one for overf 40 years and believe me in his latter years he didnt always make the best shot, yet is still did the job.
I started hunting with a round that is inferior to everything discussed thus far, the 30 carbine. It shoots a 110 grain bullet at about 1700 fps, now that sucks, but the deer didnt seem to mind, they just died.
