Hey I like private too, had my own duck lease 5 years now and I love it. So I'm not knocking private. But public vs private not the same, you have preasure and compitition on public, dont have that on private. But that is what is nice about private. Public sense of adventure, private sense of relaxation, i like both but not the same.

True, i just dont like public in texas.
I used to hunt public in oregon and washington and every time i went i was almost by myself and plenty ducks and geese.
97% of texas land is private.

If you want to hunt public in Texas, waterfowl is the only thing worth while.

Guy duck hunting has changed, a lot over the nearly 4 decades I have been chasing the birds. I grew up west of Houston on the edge of what used to be the Katy Prairie. After school we would jump in my friend's Suburban and zip out to the prairie. I can't tell you how many Mallards and pintails we killed. #5 Lead 2 3/4 shells, 5 gallon bucket to sit on and carry out your birds. All we needed was a knuckle to knock on a door. I don't remember getting turned down to hunt hardly at all. Then Larry Gore creeped over the prairie leasing it up like a disease with other outfits following suit. Now Bass Pro shops and urban sprawl has taken over that section of the prairie. I can't even find my way around out there any more. I don't even like going over there. The public game changes even more often. I am going to try and stay private for most of my hunts from here on out. I have the one lease and I am looking for more in the same area. When I retire from the station we are headed north, probably Oklahoma, and I will lease as many holes as I can. I have had enough rat racing for one man's life.

Guy, I like what you talkin. I've got access to a few hundred acres of private with several conservation lakes on them that always have birds. Only time we ever go is if there are some young kids that want to shoot some birds. I, personally, would much rather get up and grind it out. That being said, we have a few places within 1.5 hours of that house that are consistant mallard producers. I don't know group numbers, but I personally shot 85 out of 1 hole last year. Granted the Lord has blessed me with the ability to hunt everyday. That being said, this year I have only shot 5 from that hole.
