are you carrying a side arm/knife that you can quickly access? My brother and I got spooked recently with some bobcat activity, but I found carrying my pistol with one in the chamber made my walk to/from the blind a bit more comforting. Seriouse? Scared of bobcat activity?? Your card may be gone as well. Learn how to spell, [censored]. Ok... maybe Ill take your advice and try to spell correctly on the hunting forum, but you gotta take my advice and go grow a pair.

1. Quit watching zombie and vampire shows, they're stupid anyway. And yes that includes Walkng Dead. I have to think this is the root of the problem. I don't believe in ghosts or zombies, but I have always loved horror flicks
2. WTH would harm you in Texas? We don't have bears, wolves, black panthers, Sasquatch (although some would argue), etc. Coyotes and Bobcats weigh 30 lbs and how many documented cases have you ever heard of an attack. Not really afraid of animals at all.
3. Put a brick in your purse and you can swing it. Never runs out of ammo. I'll keep that in mind...
4. Don't call them "assault rifles" unless you're a liberal. I didn't get the memo. And I don't mind saying I'm not a liberal
5. This isn't the place to come for help with such matters as being scared of the dark unless you want everyone to make fun of you. You don't think I don't know that? I'm not looking for sympathy. I'm looking for solutions. I was hoping some jabbing would give me more determination to get past my phobia. I think it helps to not keep it in. I hate being called a sissy just as much as I'm sure you do. But I can take a little good natured kidding. My buddies are more ruthless than anyone is being here, and they use other euphemisms that aren't as nice. Bring it on; I won't lose any sleep over it.
But in all seriousness just man up and start walking and logically ask yourself WTH could really harm me? I can admit I was scared at one time too, but then I turned 10. Yeah. I'm not afraid of bobcats or armadillos. Some people are afraid of heights, some are afraid of flying, some people are afraid of just being outdoors. Not for any good reason, they just are. I think what I'm dealing with is something similar. Take someone with you who will ridicule you if you dont get out of the truck and to your stand pre sun up.

I walked up on a very large sow with piglets once at night on my way back to the truck with only a bow and small headlamp. She did not get that memo that in Texas, man has nothing to fear in the wild. She chased me a couple of hundred yards (I think) right into a fence. I still move around freely at night, dusk and dawn, but I do carry a sidearm with me always.

I think if she was really chasing you she would have caught you. Unless you the Michael Phelps of sprinting she would have been on you white on rice.

just the fact you bought an AR in case the "s**t hits the fan" tells me you are scared of crazy people. I'm not afraid of crazy people. That's like saying I have full coverage auto insurance because I'm afraid of driving. Haha, what...? I am, however, acutely aware that in the event of a disaster, local, national, or global, ordinary people become desperate, and someone else - maybe even your neighbor - may want what you have in order to survive. It's part of being human. It will likely never come to that, but it's nice to know I have insurance against it.

I've had a hog chase me into a box blind before. Walked up on her with piglets early one morning. Glad that stand was that close. Momma hogs and wounded hogs are all the gets my heart racing bad, but once rifle season starts, I'm way more secure knowing just firing a shot would send anything around me running. I could see why national forest would make you scared, but more of getting lost. Here everything looks the same in the Angelina NF. That's all I worry about.

Im a bow hunter, I own many guns but I picked up a bow last year and havnt put it down. I dont carry a side arm with me I firgured the idians didnt so why should I, last year I went to Caddo Grasslands up near ladonia mostly scouting but I was going to sit and see in the AM maybe get something. I walked into the woods about 5am had my top. map, compass, a small flash light, water and a bow with a quiver full of arrows. I checked the compass and marked where I was and headed out. 20 min into the hike found a series of creeks some with private property on one side some with public land in an effort to stay on public land I had to stay in the creek with a 9 foot in bankment for a good 400 yards then I could pop back up on public land to the area I wanted to check out. 100 yards into it I walked into 25 pigs beaded down it was pitch black I seen them with the flash light and quickly turned it off and back myself against the creek wall im quitely soiling myself as I hear the ears of a pig flop no more then 6 feet away at this point I have a flash light in my mouth an arrow nocked and release connected. but as I heard the ears flop again from what was apparently a pig shakeing its head like a dog I said in a normal voice slightly muffled from a flashlight HOLY F#@k uncontrollably of course and all the pigs ran away like a bat out of hell...
I still dont carry a side arm Im hopeing if that happens again I get a pig in the freezer. but dang that made my heart pump good.

Ok so what is it that really scares you about the dark woods? Is it not being able to see? Or do the horror movies run through your mind? You said it wasn't animals so I'm guessing "crazy" people still. Are you afraid of someone going Chainsaw massacre on you? Afraid of getting lost? There is something specific, what is it ???

People that love scary movies often have nightmares that are just too realistic to bear. My neighbor's son was like that. He said that his son would sit in from of the TV, eyes wide open and trembling when he watched scary movies. His son was 18 at the time, by the way. He had to go to therapy in order to deal with it.
I would suggest you figure out what it is that scares you, then make every attempt to brush it out of your mind. At some point you will need to let common sense take over instead. Realizing that your fear is unfounded is the first order of business, IMHO.
Also - before resorting to drugs, just go out and get exposed to the woods at night. Make that your priority. Take small steps, taking someone else along for awhile. Then spend maybe 30 minutes alone with someone calling distance away. Soon you can deal with it. It's all in your mind anyway...but so is just about any fear.

That was an entertaining read....
every once in a while I'll get a weird feeling like something is watching me and run either to the blind(morning) or back to the truck(evening) it's only happened a few times, but it's a weird feeling.
