See my other post on Silverado with AFM engines. Now this. Received a letter in the mail today from GM - see images below - saying they'll fix a rough idling truck due to a faulty throttle position sensor. How long before the public comes to understand there are some serious quality issues with Silverados/Sierras? Sorry if you're currently an owner. My two bits of advice is to swap it off asap before the curtain is lifted and everyone finds out these engines have serious defects. They'll only fix this if you have under 120,000 miles. That leaves me out, or would have, if I hadn't traded mine in on a new Ram 1500. The letter addresses 2008 models, but I'll bet it affects all the way to new trucks. Same goes for the faulty lifters. So long GM.

sounds like the problems they had in the mid 90's on there 6.5 turbo diesel. Bought (3) 1 tons at one time for my welding shop and I betcha they had at least 4 injection pumps a piece over 3 years. . Never said it was a problem but it was for me trying to run my field work. Fixed um up to 120,000 then.

GM has been crap for many years. A bankruptcy would have improved much. Sadly, they were saved from their mistakes only to repeat them. Low end trucks at high end prices.

Yeah I had a brand spanken new Yamaha 4-stroke outboard with a faulty TBS just last year. Yes we all know Yamaha outboards are ALL pieces of crap...
If you don't like GM move on with your new brand and forget about it.
You need to call it...I can't call it for you.

If you don't like GM move on with your new brand and forget about it. I did. If you don't like my opinion move on while keeping your mouth shut and forget about it. See what I did there? Welcome to a public forum. Untwist your jimmies and get rid of your blind devotion to a substandard product.

As the manager of a busy automotive repair/transmission shop, I can flat out tell you that they're all junk any more. Some will have problems that others might not have, but they ALL have problems. The simple fact is, they aren't built to last any more, they are built to do a job within a certain life span. Not trying to be mean or step on anyone's toes, but IMO, plastic and electronics don't belong in or on engines and transmissions that are intended for long-term use. I became an ASE Master Tech in 1988, three years after I started wrenching for a living, and we were already starting to see it then (anyone remember the old plastic/aluminum timing gears, or the plastic 3.8 Buick cam buttons?). The cars and trucks being produced now are getting closer and closer to being fully disposable due to limited support/parts availability just like computers and other consumer electronics.
Old age ain't for sissies!

Chris,
My point is the OP obviously has some deep-seeded emotions about his problems he needs to dump by the wayside. Enjoy the new ride and let the old one fade away. To suggest (as the subject line says) that owners should dump their GM trucks because of his lifter issues and a single recall is nothing short of ludicrous. This thread is about as useful as posting "Don't ever drink beer because it might give you a head ache".
The only thing so far I regretted about my current GM vehicles is getting the damn extended warranty they push on you. Both expired and unused. You might be right and I may wish I could extend them but I have not yet.
You need to call it...I can't call it for you.

We run 18 - 20 gm trucks and put 200,000 miles on'em in 3 to 4 years and very seldom have any out of pocket expenses, guess we get rid of them just in time.

Better than Toyota...moving forward even when you don't want to All orchestrated by the government to prop up their recently purchased company...GM. Which reminds me. Did any other Toyota owners get a letter from GM during that time? The front of the letter was printed to look like a recall notice from Toyota but inside was a piece of propaganda from GM wanting me to trade my ride in for a Chevy.

I had a tundra and it was the biggest hunk of crap , it was in the shop more than a BMW. Still have my Chevy and had to replace the tranny at 190k. Other than that gas and oil changes are all it needs. I will keep my gm over the Toyota any day. Like mentioned before things aren't built like they used to be anymore.

215,000 miles on my GM piece of crap that has not had a single repair other than a headlight and brakepads. My dodge was way better eventhough it had 2 transmissions and a rod out the side of the block before 60,000 miles and out of warranty. When will i ever learn.

I like my 2009 GMC, but had an odd occurance this past weekend. Leaving the lease, i noticed i had power on the dash, but no speedometer or RMP's, nor was it calculating my milege...Long trip home not knowing how fast you're going.. after i got home, i started the truck again and everything was normal except i had only turned 1 mile since i left the lease 165 miles back.. crazy.

I went Toyota earlier in the year after owning GM for most of my life and haven't looked back. BIG difference in quality. I still like the looks of the Sierras and Silverados but not the maintenance issues.

I have driven several toyotas as work vehicles and a couple friends have them. I dont think they are bad vehicles.
Do the trucks have more power? Yes, but a large part of the performance is that toyota offers either a 4.1 or 4.3(towing package) rear end, while I got a 3.42 rear end in my chevy and its the highest one you could get. Yes the yotta is more of a racecar than mine, but mine gets 20 mpg's. If you put 3.42's in the yota and a 4.3 rear gear in the chevy the tables would turn.

O and since 1985 my family has been a chevy/gmc family and the biggest thing we have had to replace is an alternator and U-joints.

Had this actually happen to two firends of mine. They had to limp to the dealership for repairs. One was out of warranty. I forget what the repair bill was.

If you look at the overall top ten list of recalls you will see Ford, GM and Toyota all have had big quality issues
That being said, I have an 07 Silerado and when I trade in a couple of years it won't likely be another Chevy don't get me wrong, it's been a good solid truck. I just think I'll look at a Ford next time
