All of us here at the shop use a 6.8 SPC w/suppressor and 12.5" barrel.

The one you shoot accurately. What gun do you use for deer hunting? It will work on hogs!

It depends on if you want to keep the meat or not, and whether or not you're going to head shot all of them. A semi-auto .223 works fine for any size pig if you're going to head shot. I don't recommend anything under a .270 for body shots, even if they plan on keeping the meat. If you just want to kill, get a high-powered semi-auto. If you want meat, head shot them with a .223 and be cost effective at the same time.

i believe in using semi-automatic rifles on pigs...223 for more shots on target faster....308 for a decent follow up shot with extended killing ranges. Also semi automatic shotguns for faster follow up shots on pigs when they are in thick cover in the timber. My personal choices are a Sig556 or a BushMaster Predetar both in 223.....an M1A in 308 and a Rem 11-87 Special Purpose with a 21 in.smoothbore barrel in 12 guage

the same setup that IdentMarking and Hoghunter65 use. Took a bunch of time to get to that setup myself but it is the huckleberry. Combined with a PVS-14 from Ident and you are cooking with gas.

Even if the gun is quiet, shooting into a sounder results in such a cacaphony of squealing and running pigs that it pretty much nullifies the effect of the suppressor. They seem to be no more than really expensive toys to me..... They might offer some advantage to guys here that hunt fencelines. The suppressor might allow you to get away with shooting across the fence.

Sounds like you've never had the pleasure of shooting a suppressed firearm. Go try one out and you might change your opinion. My new favorite hog gun is my integral 458 Socom bolt action.

Suppressors have a couple advantages. You don't blow the ear drums out of the head of the guy next to you is a big plus. They reduce the recoil which in return helps you stay on target.
Far as pigs go, a lot of times they run right at you because they only hear the round going down range. They will also change directions a lot when being shot at because they can't tell the direction it's coming from

You are right; I haven't shot a suppressed firearm. My neighbor, an attorney, recently set up a trust for his 2 adult sons, and they both own suppressed ARs. I should shoot one sometime. I bet it will be a gas! I'm still not sure about their value when you consider cost and overall hassle of obtaining one.

How handy are you? You can probably build one for about $250-$400 including the stamp. You can probably cut and paste the trust by yourself. There is an example posted on AR15.com that will be easily customizeable to fit your situation. I have personal knowledge of that very form from AR15.com working in Texas. http://www.silencertalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=79895

I think it's hard to argue with an AR if your objective is to just reduce the population. If you're looking for just that one biiiiiiig hog, then a bolt gun makes sense and I like the oomph of the .35 Whelen. We were talking about it last night though and an AR in .260 would be great, but then I got to thinking about how great an AR in .338 Federal might be and then I thought about .358 Winchester. And no one says you can't use an AR even if you're only going to shoot at one big ol' monster hog.
So, if I had money to burn for a dedicated hog gun I think it would be an AR in .358 Winchester.

I purpose built my 6.8 SPC 11 for hog hunting. Having done that, anything I happen to have with me when a hog shows up. This one showed up while I was coyote hunting with my .204 Ruger. I put a 39 gr. Sierra Blitzking in his right ear at 156 yards and dropped him in his tracks. Disclaimer, I do not go hog hunting with my .204.

the same setup that IdentMarking and Hoghunter65 use. Took a bunch of time to get to that setup myself but it is the huckleberry. Combined with a PVS-14 from Ident and you are cooking with gas. Mine is actually a DPMS LR-308. The EOTech occasionally gets swapped out with a Leupold VX-R with firedot reticle. A good gen-2+ NV sight would really round it out though.
