Well I took a spike (broke off 1+3)yesterday. I was quite puzzled at first when I got down out of the tree and looked over the area I had shot the deer. To my surprise there was not a drop of blood. I knew I made a good shot as it was only 50 yrds. The deer jumped 2-3 feet in the air and then took off like a bat through the woods before I lost site of him. I gathered up my treestand and other gear and began walking in the direction he had ran. I walked about 50-75 yards and found him expired. I could see the entry and the shot was perfect just behind the front leg. To my surprise when I rolled him over there was no exit wound. When I field dressed him there was lots of internal damage and didn't really find the heart. When I quartered him back at camp, I found the slug against the opposite leg/shoulder bone. Last year I made a very similar shot on a doe with Winchester Super X and the exit blew a softball size whole out on the opposite shoulder.

Glad you found him.

Not unusual to if that shot was tucked behind a forward front shoulder. When hit high they bleed into the cavity below and with a fat deer and the shoulder moving back and forth it keeps the entry wound closed. With no exit wound then he has to bleed out his mouth or nose.

quit using 30-06 ... Makes about as much sense as quit using core lokt. $#!? Happens.

Very rarely does a "good" shot produce bone on the ground. Not every shot and animal is the same. My son shot two doe earlier both with 168 grain sierras out of .308 both shots very similar one big exit fist size blood everywhere one small exit size of your watch face not much blood both dead fast.

I shot this a couple years back. That was the entry hole. Bullet didn't come out. .270 cor-Lokt at 45 yards. He went 25 yards.never could figure out why that hole was so big.

I've had similar issues with .30-.06 Core Lokt down in South Texas on large deer shot behind the shoulder. Sometimes little to no blood, usually they only go 30 yards or so. Like Ranch said, they're usually filled inside with blood but I guess the muscle closes the wound somehow. I agree that rarely will a good kill shot result in much bone on the ground. Have seen it rarely with some shredded shoulder blade fragments.

I have used 130 Core Lokts in my .270 for way to long to remember. Very rarely do I get a pass thru since I shoot highpoint of the shoulder and hitting as much bone as I can. Bullet is under the skin on the offside shoulder most of the time. If they do not drop, I do not get much of a blood trail since it is a high placed shot and the shoulder covers the hole when running. But I honestly can not think of a deer that I have shot with the Core Lokts I did not find since using them.

I have used core-lokt exclusively for several years. 130 grain in my .270. I hve never had one not produce a large exit wound. Nor have I had a deer go more than 50 yards, even though I shoot behind the shoulder and not through it. For what it's worth.

Never lost a deer shot with a core-lokt but have never gotten an exit wound either, usually it is under the hide on the far side and unless spine has been broken there is a little or no blood tracking job that is mostly less than 100 yards.

Dont know what to tell you "bone was on the ground", however i should have specified it was a 30-30 at 50 yds. Still use 30-06 but trust handloaded 150gr sierra game king.

depends alot on the hit .....i have used 150 core lokt in my 30 06 for many years and it leaves large exit holes most of the time ....
i think it depends on how much heavy tissue and bone the bullet travels thru ......before you change ammo or caliber i would examine the shot closely.....

I shoot winchester super X 150 grain, 30-06, every time I shoot straight in behind the front shoulder from as far as 100 yards I get an exit. Saturday I shot a nice 8 point who was running a doe going away from me at a good clip. My shot was about 75 yards, the bullet went in from behind at a very slight angle through the rib cage, took out 3 ribs before it actually entered the chest and blew the shoulder out on the inside so bad it was unusable and I still had an exit on the front side of the shoulder/chest. It left no blood trail and ran about 60-70 yards

I took down a buck yesterday with the 30.06 Remington Core Lokt. 150 grain. About 45 yards away. He dropped like a sack of rocks, NO exit wound. I was shocked. When we got him cut open the bullet was just under the skin on the exit side. The internal damage was devastating. Couldn’t believe it. I guess the Core Lokt did its job.

I load Hornady 180gr Interlock spire point slugs in my 30.06. Took a hog at 110 yards a few weeks ago. Devastating exit wound. I took a large north TX buck last season at 80 yards with a 45-70 300gr Interlock HP. Shoulder shot with no exit. Didnt move an inch. Took a large buck the year before with a .35 Rem. Hornady Interlock. 200gr RN with a Rem 760 pump at 100 yards. Didnt move an inch. You just never know. Last animal I took with a factory centerfire round was an 80 yard buck with a .35 Rem. Marlin using a 200gr Rem Core Lok RN. Ran nearly 70 yards. Ton of blood.

Taking a pump .35 Rem with Hornady Interlock 200 gr spire points and .44 mag with 240gr XTP HPs tomorrow and will report back if the stars align. I don't want the animal to take any steps after impact. The loads will achieve that if my shot placement is solid.

Guys im familiar with on other forums that handload with Rem Core Lok slugs swear by them. Most of these guys load at or close to Max powder charge (as i do)....hotter can help with bullet expansion at distance. Typically hotter than factory rounds.

I took a nice doe last evening up in north Texas. 60 yard shot with a Rem 760 in 35 Remington. 200 grain Hornady interlock 36.5 grains IMR 4895. Hit her in the neck she didn't move an inch and immediately expired. That is how I try to plan it at least.

I always had good luck with Core-lokt bullets in a 35 and 270. I don’t remember a time when I didn’t get a blood trail when I used the 35. Nothing kills em deader than a 35 Remington does. These days I use 260 hand loads and 120 gr Nosler BTs and are real happy with the combination, but I have had at least one doe leave no blood trail. 60 yard shot, right in the vitals, and no doubt of it being a deadly shot. But, no blood at all. She didn’t go far, but she shed no blood till she had gone into the woods and fell over. I would certainly expect a 30-06 and decent bullet to do the job and leave a good exit.

Sometimes I think I ought to use my old 270 more. A 130 gr BT at 3000 hits like the hammer of Thor. But, I’m doing fine with the 260.

I shot a buck last year with a 300WM 150 gr Core-lokt in the shoulder a 90 yds. No blood but he didn't go far. While processing the deer I found the bullet under the skin by the ham. The bullet had separated after impact. All I found was the metal jacket. Since Remington sold the company the quality had really gone down hill, in my estimation.

I shot a yearling spike (3 + 1 that came from a bad gene pool we are trying to get rid of) this year with a 180 gr Nosler partition out of my 30-06. Shot was about 150 yards directly into high point on shoulder. No exit, no blood, but then again the deer didn't move an inch. He was in the middle of play fighting with another yearling (2 + 2) and that deer was really confused how he knocked him out cold.
