I am sitting in a stand in Harrison county right now and it is going on to my south. It sounds like a 9mm.

I watched deer and hogs all day today while everyone else around me was shooting. The animals never payed any attention to it. It's the same when bow hunting in Oct and people are dove hunting.

My neighbor starting shooting opening morning 2 years ago, I called to see if he had "got the whole dam herd", said he was sighting in his 30-30??? totally mind boggling. I know right, you can never get a good group with a 30-30!

I've had it happen to me too. I was sitting on a deer stand in the afternoon on an expensive lease and the group next to us decided to spend the entire afternoon (close to our fence), all the way to dark, shooting for fun. There was seldom ever five minutes of quiet go by and they would start shooting again, round after round, after round. Spooked and ran the deer off and totally ruined our weekend. Hunting was good until then and after their shooting, nothing. We were mad as heck because they did not care about anybody else, but they had fun.

Happens every year on opening day out in Anderson County off of Hwy 322. This year they changed tactics and are shooting what sounds to me like fireworks artillery shells around 7 or 8am. Oh, well can't do nothing but wait for them to scare a deer your way.

I live on my ranch year round and I have a two seat covered shooting range. I shoot at least 2 or three times a week. And I hunt on the property. The deer have become so accustomed to the shooting that sometimes they wander out onto the shooting range while I am shooting and I have to wait for them to move in order to see the target. If you've ever been to Carters country in Houston on Threshwig Rd. you have probably seen deer bedding down next to the shooting range and signs saying do not shoot the deer. I do agree that shooting for the first time on opening weekend is the hight of stupidity. But eventually the deer will get used to it.

Had a guy across the road in Palo Pinto last year that liked to shoot a couple clips every Saturday afternoon.
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

That's what some city folks do when you turn 'em loose in the country with a gun. Kinda like a simpleton in a room full of bouncy balls. Much more likely just someone that lives out there and can hunt all the time. My neighbor was shooting his pistol saturday morning around 9am and he's lived in the woods for 40 years. And yes, it was probably intentionally to piss me off. Worked.

I live between buffalo and centerville and have 50 acre tracts on 2 sides of me that guys from houston come up to hunt on. They come in on friday before and shoot all day, hunt the next morning shoot for 2-3 hrs at noon then back to stands and start over the next day. I see deer in my yard every day, when that starts they disapear until it stops, During deer season when my kids were small and living at home I had to keep them in the house and the dog penned. Since my house is off the road and deer are between my house and the county road I have to keep a sharp lookout for spotlighters. Over the years bullets have come my way more than once. People are definately idiots when you turn them loose in the woods with guns

We shot a little bit Friday to make sure guns were good. Don't really see a big deal about it but I would be pissed if someone was shooting for hours close by. Did wake up at 12:30 AM Sunday morning to someone emptying an AR clip somewhere a good ways west of us...that was a bit odd.

I have a neighbor who starts "target practicing" with a 22 and 9mm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons as soon as deer season starts. Their house is a couple of hundred yards from my gate. She is an anti hunter because somebody shot her dog during hunting season. No, it wasn't on her property when it happened.
It's irritating but the deer get used to it. I have a feeder on a small wheat patch about 100 yards from the house for my wife to watch the deer feed while I am off hunting them. After a week or so, it doesn't seem to bother them.
My feeling is that it is her land and she can do as she damn well pleases on her place. But then I also have the right to shoot anytime I please once the season ends.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

I don't buy into the theory that deer instantly run from gunfire. I've shot a pig and before he quits squirming two bucks were walking up to the feeder pen where the pig was laying. What happens when it thunders? Do the deer run and hide then.? I've hunted numerous areas of the state and have seen lots of deer just stand there when a shot goes off on the next property, I guess to each his own.

Saturday I was in the stand at 12 noon. At 1 pm someone had a 30 round clip in something because I counted the shots. This went on for about an hour and a half. wasn't on our property but to the west of us.

Valid point. Unfortunately that happens all to often. We had to institute rules addressing both of those issues.

I gotta boy scout lease next door and they shoot over 500 rounds every weekend and make all sorts of noise. Never even affects the deer anymore.
Say When.....

I think it annoys me more than it does the deer. I enjoy the quiet solitude of my deerblind. I don't want to hear a lot of shooting.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

It can always be worse. We had a place for several years where our neighbor would come out to their place from around Sept. thru Dec. at least every weekend and more during the holidays and they had several youngsters along with the adults and would shoot their 22's starting from around 8 a.m. and times until right before dark. The shooting would be off and on just about all day, and I think the only time they stopped for any amount of time was when they ran out of ammo and had to drive into town and pick some up. Count your blessings.

Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Long time ago in south Louisiana where i lived the best rabbit and deer hunting spot in the area I hunted was right behind the gun range. Go figure.
Last year I shot at and missed a coyote. Less than 50 yards away and 10 minutes later I jumped at least 3 deer in the same woods. 30 minutes later and another 100 yards, I jumped a hog.
But it would make me mad too to here that the day before the season opened.

Even if it doesn't ruin the hunting it is very annoying. During Thanksgiving weekend our neighbors to the N shot thousands of rounds (Must be wealthy) and we saw nothing that weekend but more than that I enjoy the quiet. On the other hand it's their land and I have to respect that they can do what they want even if it drives me nuts...

True story. In 1983 I drew into a hunt on the NR Whittington Center in northern N. Mexico near Raton. We met the morning before season started, about 28 of us. This place is in nowhere and the center covers over 33,000 acres of land. Point being, after getting instructions everyone headed to a range and sighted in their rifles and some were concerned about it bothering the deer. The keepers at Whittington said it did not affect the deer and they would even come out and graze when matches were in progress. Said even black bear and elk would move freely when shooting matches were in progress.

Blackcoal...the bears and the elk just wanted to see who the high scorers were so they would know who to avoid...
