I've never shot a crossbow however, IMO its cheating.. Almost like shooting a gun. But I cant judge those who do because I've never done it. Whatever floats your boat I guess.

I have both but have not hunted with my crossbow yet. Compounds hold aim much better but for a short window of time. Shooting a crossbow is like shooting a rifle off hand, you really need to have shooting sticks or shoot prone to keep sight from dancing on the target. Crossbows are much louder and deer can jump the shot. Try reloading a crossbow in a tree stand, not very likely.

The one I've got is so loud theirs no way you'd need to reload it. If you miss, people in the next county will hear it. Might as well get down and stretch your back after a shot. I love my mathews and would rather take it but I got drawn for a crossbow hunt at RC WMA and they say I can't use my bow, crossbow only.

You forgot to add an option for longbow.

I take it you hunt with a handmade bow and make your own flint points and only staulk your game while wearing only a loin cloth?

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I don't know the answer to the question but I'd think crossbow. You only usually get one shot with anything anyway. Whatever works the most ethically sounds good to me. So I say both are pretty good.

I don't think it cheating, and I'm strictly compound. It gives others a chance to get in the woods that otherwise wouldn't be able too.

It's not like TX has any shortage of deer....

Carrying a crossbow around isn't exactly fun

I have shot a few different crossbows and have never found it very fun especially after a dozen shots or so. A compound is much more enjoyable and versatile in my opinion. I doubt I'll ever own a crossbow.

No matter which one you shoot, you still got to get within 30 yards to make an easy shoot. I have a crossbow and killed 7 deer with it last year. 5 in Texas and 2 in Kansas. It was something new, so I had to try it. It is loud, but fast. The deer have ZERO time to duck the arrow in 25 yards! Before they hear it, the arrow is through them and they are just about DRT. Furthest one that moved last year was 20 yards. I can't say that for my compound bow.

My compound bow is much easier to shoot, keep on target, reload, carry around, etc. Those that say it is cheating......I don't think they have lugged one a mile to the stand. As for second shots, I have made several second shots with my compound....a buddy shot 3 times a few days ago on my land at hogs and hit 2 of them (with compound).

20 years ago, this same thread was about compound Vs long bow.......

JakeJJ try metting a nice lady that thinks she can beat the traffic across several lanes of traffic with you doing highway speed, enjoy the hospital food and the 6 months of physical therapy and get told you will need another surgery when it get so bad you can't stand the pain. I guess I will just have to cheat if I want to bow hunt.

I believe a crossbow is an good alternative to compound... Buddy of mine bought a bow and sold it a year later... He just couldn't get it down. He's deadly with a rifle and might be goog with a x bow, still gotta take the same precautions as now hunters. just gotta scope

Even though I have no desire to use a crossbow, I think that allowing a crossbow in archery season allows people that may not be able to shoot a bow to enjoy the experience and could draw additional people into hunting...which is always a good thing up

I used a compound for several years when I was younger. Last year I bought a Horton Vision from a guy in the classifieds and I love it. Yes, it's heavy and sometimes awkward but it's extremely accurate up to 55 yards. 55 to 75 is still deadly but less accurate. I am a healthy guy and could easily shoot a compound but haven't purchased one because I'm such a gun whore I can't fit it in the annual budget. It does feel like I am cheating a little bit and I do think the compound is more challenging and takes a different skill than using a rifle. But the thought that it is cheating is in our old school heads. We are at the top of the food chain because of our tools. Opening weekend for rifle season I will not have any problems using my Leupold scope while wearing my under armour long johns!

on colorado they won't let you scope a muzzleloader. also cant use sabots or pyrodex pellets.

i don't think they should be illegal, but I don't think they should be allowed in the archery season.

Unless you have a legitimate upper limb disability keeping you from shooting a bow, then archery should be used only for archery.

hunting with a crossbow that shoots a bolt 400 fps with a scope on it is not archery

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

What about a long bow with poison pot arrows? peep

Well, I have a compound bow and a crossbow. Due to a shoulder injury, I must use a crossbow until my shoulder improves.

Those who are crying that using a crossbow is cheating will someday use crossbows when they encounter shoulder problems.

So count your blessing that you can continue using a compound bow...but the day will come when you will sing a different tune about crossbows.
