The big thing is.... I paid $140 for my 870 and ill outshoot any auto it's not the gun that hits the bird. Look out!!! haha...I missed that. The point here is everything being equal but the shotgun. The best shooters in the world will on average shoot better with semi autos or O/Us vs pumps.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

You could make an argument that the best shooters in the world would kill more birds with a pump vs OU because of the extra shell. But simi autos are king.

The only reason I said O/U is for clay shooting sports where two shots is standard. For hunting you could go with a pump and have more birds.

That is one thing I would think would change the whole perception of the quality of the current crop of 870's.......Remington needs to open the chamber bore up a little more so if the shell happens to swell a little it won't stick. I had to sand the chamber on mine. I did it with some 80 grit emory cloth wrapped around a roll pin and chucked up in a drill. I have zero issues with this guns mecanical performance with that one modification.....An 870 can still be a heck of a deal, it just needs a little tweaking to get it to work properly, but really I see no reason why Remington couldn't take care of this at the factory............. I totally agree with the above. One of my co-workers purchased an 870 tactical with exactly the same extraction problem. He removed some material from the chamber with a sanding drum attachment for his dremel and then polished with red compound, which fixed the issue. However, he found that the barrel would repeatably place foster slugs well off the point of aim laterally. The internet rumor is that the tactical barrels are taken out of the reject bucket and cut down to "really cool" length. I have no idea if that is true or not, but I couldn't resist throwing it out there.

Since you cant really test drive a shotgun you are thinking of buying, like you can a car, best advice;
handle as many as you can, practice your mount, the swing, and get real familiar with the feel of the different guns. Every gun fits people differently. FInd one that really fits you and feels good in you hands, against your cheek and swings well and is in your price range. Do a little research on the gun, read some reviews, etc. Buy it. Shoot the heck out of it every chance you get so the gun becomes 'second nature' in your hands and then start killing a lot of ducks and geese and what not...

New 870s are crap. They jam all the time or so I heard. Get an older model Love when people say stuff like this. I have never had a problem with my Remington 870 wingmaster. Neither have any of my three cousins. Never listen to people who do not have first hand experience. I have first hand experience with a a 12 and 20 gauge wingmaster, a synthetic 870 express and a walnut stock 870 express. The synthetice is about 15 years old and the walnut is 8 years old. Wingmasters are both from the 80's. Wingmaster's are very reliable with little maintenance required. The first express I had was ok but needed to be kept clean and wasn't as bullet proof as the wingmasters. I have a Nova that is about the same age and it is more durable and reliable. The last walnut express has been very dissapointing. It jams with many shells and doesn't have the same feel as the older models. I am shooting a Silver Hunter now and my son shoots a Franchi Affinity. So far the Affinity is great. Brownings customer service has sucked.

I'm a fan of Brownings O/Us but they have had some issues with Semiautos.... the Golds the three people I personally knew that owned them liked them but had to clean them after every hunt or they would jam really bad...I never heard anyone complain about Silvers. Had only one person I know complain about the Maxus.

I shoot a Browning Gold 3 1/2 and it has never failed on duck loads
it has to be clean to shoot target loads though.
it is a duck cannon only type gun
it's ok though, because I am a duck only shooter

From my own limited experience I would go with a good used wingmaster from at least as far back as the '80(have one from 1967 and one from 1964, both still going strong) or a BPS(duck gun for last 21 years). That is assuming you like pumps, I don't shoot semis myself.

I have first hand experience with the new 870s and I don't think they are well made any more. There is no doubt that the old 870s were very reliable, but the new ones are not near the same quality. I stopped shooting mine in favor of a BPS which has never failed me in any way (not a single jam), while my 870 would jam every hunt at least once or twice. I have to hunting buddies that shoot 870s, and both of them jam consistently. I now shoot a SBE and have never had a jam. I have come to the conclusion that the 870 is no longer a good value, it's just a cheap gun.

hahaha im not saying its going to be my competion gun i love my citori 625 sporting way too much to use my 870 on the range. there are a lot of great pump shooters out there but almost all of they either started with a pump or thats all they shoot because of the muscle memory they have developed but if you were to put one in the hands of someone that only shoots an auto they wont be able to hit anything becaue they are thinking about the pumping. Shooting is 80 percent mental.

There is also going to be an adjustment phase to any new shotgun and it will take time to reach a good proficiency level. Anybody that is good with a pump could in the long run be better with a semiauto.

Shop around and shoot as many as you can. Find your favorite one. Regardless of price save and wait til you have enough funds and buy THE GUN that you want.
With all the money that is spent on shotgun shells, waders, leases, decoys, calls, gas, etc. the shotgun is probably your cheapest investment even if its a $1200 - $1300 Benelli or Berreta. If its well taken care of your grandkids will be shooting it one day.
I'm far from rich, but I will never buy a used gun for hunting. If I was a collector then that's a different story. But I only buy guns for hunting. So I'm going to buy what I want. If I can't afford what I want, I will wait and save until I can. I also don't ever plan on selling any of my firearms.
Again, the gun is the cheapest investment.

I always try to buy used first, well actually I try to trade used first, then buy used second. Buying new is the last resort.

Again, the gun is the cheapest investment. I really agree with buying the gun you really want. I can't even count the number of people I know that went cheap and then a few years later they ended up buying the gun they really wanted in the first place. It actually costs more money to do it that way. I don't mind going used though if you are just buying something to get you by until you save up for that gun you really want.

these post are great. everyone has the brand they love and everyone has the brand they hate. all brands FTF or jam or dont kick out the empty. I dont care if you are talking rifle, pistol, or shotgun. buy the gun you want. period. I just bought a beretta 3901. I love it, it fits me well and I shoot really good with it. Now as fate would have it...It had some problems with the sear on the trigger. I had to send it in and get it fixed...does that mean I dont like it? heck no I still love it. S*&T happens with all makes and models. buy the gun you want that fits you well.
