Neither one. Got get you a bow and arrow and get closer.
Seriously, it doesn't matter. Pick one. Short action vs long action. Personal choice is all it is. Now you are talking my language. Bow is the way to go! And next Saturday can't get here soon enough...

I'm gonna buy another gun eventually and I don't know if I want a .308 or a 30-06. I love my .270 but I always like to shoot other guns. Given any hunting situation I will always pick the 06 over the 308. This.

i always liked hearing my dad say "ought-six" when i was little so the old "ough-six" was the first rifle i bought for myself. will never need another deer rifle...even though i use my old lever action 30-30 most of the time.
If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

Like you said, flip a quarter on cartridge. Being that they are very similar, I would look at the style of gun. Short action vs. long action, barrel length, how purdy it is, etc. If you do alot of hunting in a blind or stalking in thicker areas, I may opt for the 308 in an 18" - 20" barrel, along with having a short action it's pretty easy to move around in tighter spaces. If that isn't a deciding factor, get one of each! I would also compare the price of the ammo for the 30-06 and the .308.

Six of one... half dozen of the other. A center-punched deer certainly won't know the difference.
Actually, there are a couple of differences worthy of consideration: long action versus short action... and you can find some lighter, handier rifles in .308.

my 30.06 has dropped a 700+-lb elk bull @ 275 yds dead in his tracks, and a 600-lbs blue wildebeast @ 160 yds dead in his tracks. But that was more a function of the bullet (Barnes tripleshok) than the differance between 30.06 & .308. Really, choosing between these two is splitting hairs. Find a rifle you LOVE in either caliber and buy it. Sure, .308 is more consistent @ 300+ yds, but seriously how often will you take such a shot? And having said that, 30.06 is available in a myriad more cartridges than the .308, so even if the .308 is more accurate at insane distances is that really worth the loss in cartridge flexibility? You can shoot varmits with 30.06 @ 55gr! My vote: 30.06. You can take anything in North America with it, and you can also take any plains game in Africa with it. Versatility says a lot! But, you have to decide by shouldering a few rifles and seeing what feels better to you.

Ballistically at that range there will be no difference really due to the overlap in bullets you can purchase.
Choose whichever you want.

No difference at all at those ranges. Personally, I would choose 308 only becaause I already have an '06.

Only the names are different, the effects are the same on the deer.
Now which is the most versatile cartridge? It is the .30-06.
The .308 Winchester loaded to its max potential equals the .30-06 at its middle level of performance. In a good bolt gun the .30-06 can push against the balistics of the old .300 H&H magnum. But that was not the original question, in the woods and out to 200 yds they are esentialy the same.
I love both rounds and would never feel under gunned with either.
.30 caliber goodness at 2700 fps is hard to beat.

I'm gonna buy another gun eventually and I don't know if I want a .308 or a 30-06. I love my .270 but I always like to shoot other guns. The .30-06 vs. .30-06 short debate will rage on for 100 pages in any forum, however, if you look at this from a practical performance perspective there will be absolutely zero difference between the two for your stated scenario. There will probably be a wider range of hunting rounds available off the shelf for the '06 and if you ever want to take your rifle to Alaska or Canada you can push 200-220 grain pills, but if you like to shoot a lot in the off-season then the .308 will be cheaper to feed. It's a complete and total wash.

I kill maybe 1 deer a year with 30-06 the others with bow but I think your .270 is probably a better round than 30.06 or .308. Much flatter shooting...... If i had to pick one of the other though i'd take 30.06 over .308 cuz all my redneck buddies have 30.06 so if i forget bullets i can always find them easily

If you know how to shoot and can hit a target 200 yards away, it does not matter, either cartridge will do. And what does this have to do with snipers? Everybody has a sniper buddy seems like. The Winchester Model 70 30-06 was the prefered platform for sniper in Vietman, but they were killing people, not deer. The 308 is not a preferred caliber for military snipers shooting over a 1000 yards, which most of them do, but they are killing people too, not deer. Heck, you should get 338 lapua or a 50 cal Barrett, since that is what most snipers use, that should take care of your deer problem.

Just my two cents, bullets are usually easier to find in a wider variety for a .30-06. Have shot both, I prefer .30-06, but for no other reason than just feels good to shoot. I've noticed that .270 and .30-06 bullets are sold in many obscure locaations, in case you are ever in a bind and need ammo!!! Just find one of either you like (looks and feel).

3006 only cause I have one in 742 Rem. Otherwise it would be a Winchester Model 100 or 88 in 308. I also have a Winchester Model 100 in 284 win. Best handling rifle I have ever picked up.
