I shoot a Remington 1187 12 gauge, and it is having problems ejecting shells. I just got it back from a gunsmith because it was doing this last time I took it out, and it still won't eject them consistantly. One of my buddies said I need to buy higher brass shells, and that should fix it.
I have no idea myself and I am about to just go buy a good ol' 870.
Any advice would help.

You have to clean them religiously.

What type of shell are you shooting?

Also, how clean is the gun?

Mine works like a charm as long as im running 1.25oz loads through it. Less than that and it has issues. (havent tried heavier loads, but i assume they would worl fine). Give it a try and at least you will know.

Ive got a 26" barrell, have always wondered if it would make any difference w/ a 28".

Keep em clean. If your buying an 870 I'd hope you'd get an older one instead of a new one.

Yesterday was the first time I have shot it since getting it from the gunsmith and he cleaned it very thoroughly. I was gonna try getting some heavier loads. I have been shooting 1 1/8 oz and I was hoping those we're heavy enough. Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.

I hate mine too but only my 1187 super it sucks the other one cycles fine with 1 1/8 oz shells or larger

It's possible that your gas ports are getting clogged. Clean it before AND after every outting and keep the bolt chamber well oiled. Remington's require a lot of attention.

Put a nice high quality pipe cleaner into the chuck of your cordless drill. Dip the pipe cleaner in powder solvent. Put the pipe cleaner into the barrel gas port and pull the trigger on the drill.

My 1187 is the bad weather duck gun so it has been through a good bit.

Also, you might try turning the gas seal around so that the step down is toward the receiver when shooting low brass shells. This also will give the action a little more umph. I've done this many times when shooting dirty low brass promo loads to keep everything working until I could get home and clean the 1187.

I shot over 10,000 shells through my 1187 premier and never had a problem until a friend didn't know how to take it apart and screwed up the ejector clip (long story). I got an 1187 supermag now and have had zero problems with it.

The chokes don't stick in it, the butt pad don't fall off and it fires everytime! Of course, I spray mine down with WD 40 (outside) before duck hunting and clean it after every weekend. Just in case you put your gun in the case and forget it for a month, the WD 40 keeps it from rusting.

To the OP, my advice to you is to get a second opinion from another gunsmith. There is zero reason that your gun should not eject shells unless something is wrong with it.

I hated mine so I sold it and bought a browning. Now I have no problems.

Bought one three years ago. It shoots everything and has only jammed twice. As mentioned, keep it clean; there is something wrong with yours.

WD stands for "water displacement", it is the best stuff you can spray on the OUTSIDE of your gun to protect from water/rust damage.

Ever go hunting while it was wet and put your gun away (and forget to clean it) and then open it up a month of more later? If you use WD40 on the outside, your jaw wouldn't drop as far when you opened up the case!

To each his own, but 90% of the people out there don't clean their guns as specified by the manufacturer. Therefore, their opinions on which gun is better is more of a guess.

What year is your 11-87? I bought one two years ago and the new ones just are as good as the Remingtons of old...so I bought a Benelli!

My first 1187 was bought in 1998 and it was a premier that handled 3" shells. My new 1187 was bought last year and it cycles the 2 3/4 inch shells just fine with the provided tube ring. Actually, I load my own shells and I don't even use the ring. Zero defects so far. Note: the load tube isn't polished like the previous 1187 (like the old 1100's). So, you don't lube it! You are suppose to let the powder burn off lube it for you.

I have a browning gold finger and it shoots flawlessly too. I was hunting with a fellow TFF'r last year when his butt pad fell off his Benelli. Talk about a bad hunt! Try shooting 3" shells without a butt pad on one of them! Berreta's have their issues too. Was getting ready for a west texas hunt a few years ago and we were all cleaning our guns. Buddy couldn't get the choke tube out of his Berretta!

I am not saying one gun is better than the other, but will say that 1) they all can have issues 2) if you don't clean them regularly, I don't feel sorry for you when you get up at 2am to claim your public spot to find out at first light your gun doesn't operate! 3) 99% of issues with all guns could have been prevented with proper care

My biggest issue was I hadn't put more than 250-300 rounds through mine and it was already messing up. I traded somebody for an 870. I have always liked pump action anyways. I know that there is about a $300 difference in the guns but hopefully when I take my new 870 out this weekend it will shoot like a champ.

I would like to add that 1187 problems is quite a lot of problems... Lol. Sorry, couldn't help it...
