Carlos Hathcock used a .30-06 I was wondering when this name would come up.

If I already had a .270, .308 or .30-06 I wouldn't get one of the others. When having my .30-06 built the overall performance, bullet selection available (.270 is pretty limited to .308) and ability to buy ammo anywhere ammo is sold made up my mind.
If looking at another cartridge rifle consider a change in class. Such as a .22 Hornet, .223, .243 or .338 Win Mag will give your battery some versatility. TC

Just for the sake of argument, the difference between the two is spit. Reloaders will tell you that the 308 takes 45 grains of powder to push a 168 gr. pill. The 30-06 takes 49 grains. Difference is a case that is 51mm in 308 vs 63mm in 30-06. All this equates to about a 5% difference between the two. Military changed from the 06 round to the 308 in order to save weight in the pack. It really is a tale of the tape. Go to Federal cartridge chart or any other ammo manufacturer and look at the difference in bullet drop at specific ranges. 308 is cheaper to shoot. Lots of surplus out there.

The average hunter will not notice any real difference in accuracy in either of these guns. With a quality bullet you will hit whitetail size game vitals pretty consistently. Our military and le snipers are highly trained talented individuals and me choosing .308 or 30-06 because that is what they use does not improve my ability to get hits in the ten ring.

I'm gonna buy another gun eventually and I don't know if I want a .308 or a 30-06. I love my .270 but I always like to shoot other guns. Yes

Do you like blondes or brunettes?
Personally, I like the redheads (7mm-08)
But yeah, you already have a .270 which is so very close to the .30 caliber choices you're looking at, I'd vote for something further down the chain like a .243 possibly. Or the 7-08. Did I mention that? ;-)
Boom!

the biggest reason to choose a .308 over a .30-06 is the shorter action and slightly lighter gun. Some manufacturers make one sized fits all long action for .308. People will tell you the .308 is more accurate but I have an 06 that shoots sub MOA and a .308 that shoots 1.5 My advice is bring more gun to the fight but practically get the gun that feels the best and is the best price.

with me it would come down to if i'm buying new or used....
If I were buying new then go with a 308, more popular right now so you would have better resale. in a new gun both calibers cost the same, so go with the one that will have better resale or make better trade bait if you decide you dont like it.
If I were buying used go with a 30-06, the used market is full of 30-06's and there not as popular as they used to be., the ol supply vs demand rule works in your favor and you may be able to get a better quality used 30-06 for alot less than a comperable used 308.

I would choose a .3006 due to the wide range of bullet weights it is able to shoot. More options than .270 and .308, therefore wider range in animals that can be hunted with it. My two cents.

I have two rifles in 30.06...a Ruger American, and a Remington 700 ADL. They are both excellent rifles, and I absolutely love the 30.06 caliber. But, as someone said earlier, you can never have too many guns, so I have a 308 and a 270 on the horizon. Now, if my budget can just catch up with my wants.......

I have both and much prefer my .308 because it can shoot anything from a 115gr to a 220gr no problem. So can a 30-06 but harder to control bullet speed since you need 70% of the case full of powder. I can shoot sub sonic rounds with a can on my .308 and that is much harder to do with my 30-06 due to the small amount of powder you have to use for subsonic. Understand this might be more than you are looking for but you never know one day, you might want to shoot without the loud crack. Other than that, they will both knock anything down in the US if you place your shot right. Enjoy whatever you get.

308 is what i shoot. I'll admit that my reason is stupid. When i very first decided to buy a rifle, i was 13 years old, and very into the whole "sniper" thing. I desperately wanted to be a sniper so I bought my rifle in the round they use.
Now i've been shooting it so long that it's just what i'm biased toward.
I have family that swear by 30-06 and there's nothing bad to say about it. Same for .270

308......you can't get an AR in 30.06!!! I'm with billybob on this one!! I own A R15 Remington and that thing shoots lights out in 308 with dang near anything you feed into it!!

This is like saying does the left nut work better than the right nut lol.
On a serious note basically the 06 has an edge on paper but inside 200 yds or even more but for arguments sake that's probably a reasonable happy medium the animal won't tell a difference.
One note: 308 is a military round so u can get some pretty good deals on quality mil surp ammo that's a plus. Also if u wanna run an ar platform in the future u only have 1 cal for both guns.

Flip a coin....but I do like my .308 LTR. Very accurate and the 20" barrel is easy to manage in a blind.
