I'm gonna buy another gun eventually and I don't know if I want a .308 or a 30-06. I love my .270 but I always like to shoot other guns.

I don't have a dog in this hunt cause I believe one can't have too many guns (one of each would be OK with me), but I'll bet you get a bunch of answers.......

i shoot a .308 and to tell you the truth about the only thing diffrent your going to get from thoes 2 guns is about 100 to 200 fps and prolly about .5 of and inch more drop for the .308 @ 200 yards. if you have 100 yard zero.

Either one will do. Either caliber has a wide range in bullet grain. I saw a .308 in a 225 grain bullet, never shot one that heavy.

i dont think i would shoot that 225 grain bullet. 150 grn is onlt 2790 fps thats gotta be like barley hitting 2000 fps. of course whatever you hit would prolly knock the tar out of it jsut better be close to it hahah

Thats pretty much what I was thinking. They are both very much alike. I think it might come down to flipping a quarter...

.308 is the preferred sniper weapon and not the 30/06. I would be all over the .308

6 on one hand, half a dozen the other. trajectory and performance on game (in particular with lighter and medium weight bullets) are very comparable. on 180+ grain bullets, theres a bit more difference, but still not much. I've somewhat standardized on the 308 family of cartridges. I have a 243, 7mm-08, and a 358, and like all 3. oddly enough, I dont have a 308, but have been keeping an eye out for a deal on one...

Like you said, flip a quarter on cartridge. Being that they are very similar, I would look at the style of gun. Short action vs. long action, barrel length, how purdy it is, etc. If you do alot of hunting in a blind or stalking in thicker areas, I may opt for the 308 in an 18" - 20" barrel, along with having a short action it's pretty easy to move around in tighter spaces. If that isn't a deciding factor, get one of each!

I have always voted 3006 since Insert-name-here's Hardware in any Texas town will stock it...BUT with the military adoption of .308, lots of surplus floating around which is what caused Insert-name-here's Hardware to start selling ammo in the first place.
If the Army shoots it, the civilians will follow.
So...308 may be the future, but even if it is, 3006 will be on the shelf right next to it.
BTW, none of my sniper buddies shoot .308, which says alot about what they buy when Uncle Sugar "releases" them.

My next will be a .308 but the benifit of the 30-06 is if you ever need ammo it is much easier to find. Lets say you travel some place and forget your ammo. Chances are someone else will have a 30-06 or you can get some from the local Walmart. Not so easy with .308.

I have never been able to tell any practical difference in any of the three. If you want a new gun go get it but the 270, 280, 308, 30/06 are all in a daisy chain. Classic Rocks echos my experience with ex military shooters. They usually go with some derivative of the 300 H&H case or larger with 190 grain bullets or heavier. Horsepower trumps!

Up to 200 yards, get whichever one you can get the best deal on. Ballistics wise, the two are very similar.

I have a 30-06 & my son has 308. I would not hesitate to use his and he would have no problem with mine. Both are great calibers w/ great info. The 308 is little lighter on the recoil, but I don't notice a differance when I hunt.

.30-06 is my choice......you can buy this round from any sporting goods store. It is a very popular round. .308 round is popular with the military guys.

If one reloads, or target shoots, probably the 308, if purchasing to go Elk Hunting...definitely the '06. I think the 308 is a little more accurate in most applications and with a good projectile will take effectively any animal walking in No. America...If you really want a good 30 cal..I'd prob. opt for a 300 Win Mag..DD

Can you say RETRO? .308 has been around for decades and commercial ammo is everywhere, and can be found just as easy as '06 ammo. I was hunting with a .308 back on the 70's.
Anyway, just go out and shoot both and see which you prefer. I bet the shoulder likes the .308 better...

Neither one. Got get you a bow and arrow and get closer.
Seriously, it doesn't matter. Pick one. Short action vs long action. Personal choice is all it is.
