Flyways are flyways for a reason... they have a flight path where there is consistent sources of what I listed above.

Ding Ding. A bird has to have these to survive. It sums it all up. If you have all of these things put together minus hunting pressure you will have ducks. If there is hunting pressure then you will have to let your spot rest. If you do not have all of these things together then you may or may not have ducks minus hunting pressure. again adjust the hunting pressure.

Remember puddle ducks can only feed as deep as they can dip. So if your hole has only about 2 or 3 ft of shallow water before it gets deep then your food source is limited and wont take long until its peeled off and the ducks go somewhere else. Ducks will follow draws, creeks, rivers, and even powerlines coming from their roost. Google earth your duck hole and see if you have one.

^^^ damn good post jeff. This is all you need to know

Several factors. Climate. Time of year. Location. Amount of water for flooding area for invertebrate feeding. Mate pairing. One of the biggest things to consider is that birds will stay longer in an area for survival based on energy consumption. The more energy it takes to find food and consume the less chances a bird will be in that area. The bird will try to stay in an area that takes less energy expenditure to find food. Kind of like duck hunters. If you spend more energy trying in an area where it doesn't produce ducks, you will move onto an area that takes less energy to hunt and produces more birds to harvest.
