On more than one occasion I have had family and friends ask to borrow a shotgun, rifle, or pistol. What is your policy about lending guns and why? Sound off.

don't loan it out unless you don't care about what condition it is in when it comes back...or if you ever get it back at all.

OR, loan it only when you will be with that person from start to finish-i mean sitting in blind with that person-so you can monitor the use and take it back at the end of the hunt.

I have loaned guns before, but they were responsible people. I would never loan a gun out to be used by someone that I didn't know well.

I might depending on who wanted to borrow it but I would be a little more flexible if I was going to be with them.

I've got a couple just for loaners, but will only loan my "good" guns to trusted family members/friends.

If it is someone that is proficient with a firearm and hunts regularly, I would wounder why they need to borrow mine, but I have in the past loaned my back-up rifle to another Elk hunter whose scope would not keep zero. I wouldn't loan one so some one could "just go shot ".

I've got a buddy that doesn't have much money. He hunts the Hill Country and the biggest rifle he owns in a .243. He does most of his hunting with a .222. He occasionally gets invited on a hunt to Bracketville. When he does I loan him my 7 mag.

I have a couple of junkers that I will loan out to a newby. They are accurate, but look like they were dragged behind a tractor while plowing a section of land. Only loaned at our place, and they must have passed hunter safety course and then convince me they know what they are doing. I also usually sit in the blind with them a few times to get an idea of if they are safe.

One of my good ones? Not a snow balls chance, even with a cash deposit there is no way.

There are a few guns that will not be loaned out except to a very select few. Others that if s friend or relative needs one to hunt with then the loan is made. sure there have been a few dings put on some guns and there are some that have lost the loaner privileges from it.

I am a little stunned and glad the overwhelming majority of thfrs loan their guns. My grandfather drilled into us "You don't loan your guns or tools any more than you would loan your wife".

The reason I am glad so many will loan their guns is I got rid of all of mine and I needed to know who I could count on. I prefer. 270 or larger zero'd @150 yards. banana2 bolt

I've loaned 2 one ended up in a pawn shop, somewhere and another came home with a bent barrel and broken stock. My guns stay in my care, period.

As long as they clean it and have it back the day after they are done with it.

Only way something is getting "loaned" is if we're on the same hunt. Even then, I don't like loaning rifles even if I'm sitting there. No problem loaning a shotgun, again if I'm there.

Not to hijack this thread, but I don't loan out or let anyone ride either of my ATV's. Such things have a tendency not to work in the same manner once you get them back.

Don't do it. Nothing good comes out of loaning guns. If you get them back you will have bad feelings over scratches, dents, of coming home dirty.

About 30 or so yrs. ago we were hunting the NW corner of Colorado
called the Cathedrals..and had been for yrs..My cousin brought a
fellow and his wife he owed a favor to along..He and his wife had
2 new rifles w/new scopes and he was constantly comparing his rifles to our old hunting guns/scopes ect..After a couple of days
both his scopes froze up and were useless..and he begged both of my rifles from me as I had tagged out..The next day I watched as
he and his wife took my good rifles and used them as walking sticks to climb up a ridge in about a 4ft snow drift..He didn't get my rifles again..and it took 2 wks to get all the mud ect out
of the butt pads and I had to refinish the stocks..If they don't
own it and are not blood kin/and with me..NO LOANS..DD

Only person I trust enough to let one of my guns out of my sight with is my Dad. I have been on hunts where I was with another person who questioned if thier gun could make a certin shot or not and I handed them my rifle to make the shot, but as a rule I wont let the gun out of my sight unless its my Dad.
