I carry one but it's in case there's a zombie outbreak while I'm out hunting. A 3 shell shotgun is no match for hoards of zombies. But my Glock with 30round mag will save me.

If I shoot a decent rattler this weekend I'm going for the head because the rest will be food.

your doing it all wrong Ed, sometimes those non-venomous snakes will grew the glands needed to produce venom, its not pretty

Sure, I carry a Grizzly 45 Mag pistol and a couple of spare mags. I figure if I miss the snake it won't be by much and concussion will either kill the snake or allow the time for a second or third shot as needed. In the event of pigs with the extra mags I am prepared to dispatch a number of them. After that I will draw my Kabar let go a blood curdling yell and dive in among them.

oh and the one shot = one dead Zombie so there needs to be a fair number of them.

A pistol is always good to have around, for any reason.
I would rather have a pistol for little miss piggy, but buck shot would do well too.
I think September 1, would be the absolute worst day for a zombie outbreak.... For the zombie.

I'm new to hunting and carrying my revolver makes me feel awesome when I'm in the field.

No we don't as a Shotgun works just fine

Pistols can be dangerous in the field when you have other hunter's around , what if your shot ricochets and hits someone ?

I carry either my concealed pistol or my service revolver. If I see a 'yote or hog, I don't have time to unload my 7 1/2s and reload with buck. They don't seem to want to hang around too long. I can draw and shoot faster with my pistol than trying to change out my shells.

im with you on this one bud. I used to be afraid of snakes when I was younger..Then I met a great friend that taught me that there is absolutely nothing to fear about them. Now I love snakes and wont kill any. I will teach my boys when they get old enough to respect them..and how to catch them. They do more good for the ecosystem than most people think. He taught his kids to respect and appreciate snakes as well. His daughter still has his pet rattlesnake.

This is my late friend Jimmy who passed in 2006. He had been bitten by rattlesnakes 9 times. Once in Monteray mexico. Instead of going to a mexican hospital, he drove himself back to dallas to get the anti venom.

He also inadvertently lost two cobras in cedar hill. While parked on the side of the highway out looking for rattlesnakes. He had the cobras in a bucket and set them out beside the car in the shade. From the top of the hill he looked down and saw some punk kids messing with his car. He yelled and when he got back down there, the bucket had been opened and turned over. the kids prob crapped their drawers and split when they realized it was snakes in the bucket...haha




although the below snake is not venomous..he never used any tools but his hands to catch snakes. Ive watched him crawl under boulders and come out with rattlesnakes.

I don't kill them either. I don't want to say anything about your friend as he has passed. I will say doing a hot grab on a venomous snake is not a good thing nor is it smart. I handle venoumous snakes on a daily basis this time of year. It still scares the crap out of me and I use tools.

This had happened to me several times till I got the notion to carry. My son once said, "shoot it"!!! I replied, "with number 8's? I dont want to piss him off"!

Snakes are venomous not poisonous.

no worries man, he did not pass by snake. He died in a rock climbing accident.

You know, it may not be something that most people think is smart. Even those who work with snakes regularly. I myself do not do it, but having known him for years and watched him many times catch snakes..i have no doubt that he was comfortable with them..and what he was doing was perfectly fine and safe to him. Maybe not others, but he was good with it. He was an active herpetologist and spent his entire life collecting snakes. He was not afraid of them. he wasnt even afraid of getting bit because he had built up a tolerace to the venom and knew right where to go to get anti venom.

All of the times he was bitten..strangely had nothing to do with trying to catch them. They all happened while out on the trail en route to rock climbing destinations or while climbing. The one in mexico happened when he was climbing and pulled up on a ledge and the rattler was sitting right there and caught him by surprise.

"The highlight of his herp career was a major collecting trip in Mexico and the SW USA with Dave Barker and others back in the mid 80's. On that trip, they collected several of the an amazing variety of reptiles. Including the first legally collected specimens of L.t.knoblochi (a rare mountain kingsnake). Always. I saw episode of american hoggers and they said that wild hogs will search you out and attack you.
For snakes and zombies I figure my shotgun will work.

I always wondered why people would rather shoot a few grains of lead at a danger than an ounce of lead. To each their own.
