I am extremely new to bow hunting. Have yet to draw back on an animal. I haven't bought any broadheads yet. What would you recommend for a beginner and why? Also, which brand?

Since you are extremely new to bowhunting you are probably unaware of the mountains of arguments over this very question. Everyone has their own success or failure stories supporting their arguments. So, for what its worth, I prefer fixed (Slick Tricks to be specific). The reason; I like it simple. they fly straight in my rig, always give me good penetration, and there are no moving parts to fail.

I'm not going to pour mouth any broadhead I've never used. There are many good ones out there, but none of them are good if the shooter is not. Mechanicals will fly closer to field points. Therefore you won't have to tune your bow after practicing with field points. That being said, there are a few fixed broadheads that fly pretty close to the field points. I personally use Spitfire 100 grain. Never had one fail in the 10 plus years I've been using them. I've used Muzzy 100 grain and they worked fine, but they flew different than the field point.

Pick which ever you want to shoot , If you hit the animal in the right spot they will all work !
Good luck , Bowhunting is the most fun and exciteing hunting you can do . But be very cautious , It very addictive !

Like the others not going to badmouth ones I have not used. These days I use fixed Montec G5s, they hit to the same place as my field points and Judos so easy to switch around.

That was one concern. I have gotten pretty good out to 35 yards with the field tips. Not gonna attempt anything beyond that this year. But haven't shot any broadheads yet. Need to get a target for them so I can practice with them. A buddy loaned me a Matthews Drenalin he doesn't use anymore and it is pretty sweet to say the least.

Remember, if you use mechanicals, you really don't need to practice with them. They are going to fly pretty much the same as your field points. You may want to shoot one just to see, but the better ones aren't cheap, so I would recommend not doing it or getting some target blades if they are available. I know Spitfires make target blades. You can take the hunting blades off one of your tips to practice with. It's easy to do, but like I said, you really don't need to. Good luck.

No one has mentioned penetration of one or the other. Fixed blade heads will give you better penetration. If your shooting lower poundage it is a consideration. Being new to the sport have someone teach you to paper tune your bow. Tuning must be done regardless of type broadhead. If someone tells you different get your advice else where. Most important is to practice and be confident in your shooting. Good Luck!

for a new guy. a big arse fixed blade.
although i use rage and love them.
mechanicals dont always do well on bone and until you have a few critters under your belt and understand how to hit a moveing traget stick with a good bone busting fixed blade.
there is my 2cents. free of charge.

Personally I prefer a fixed blade broadhead. Guilty as charged on the amount of times this topic has come up. I recently posted up some stuff on here about a month ago on mechanicals and if you search for it you will see different opinions. If you do a search on here you may find this topic has come up a few times. I'm not trying to be rude but you will probably find a few answers there on many posts and threads that cover this.
My best suggestion is to do a search on youtube and look for some videos of certain brands of broadheads being tested on ballistic gel or through something of the sort. That may be helpful. If you find some you think are interesting I would say come back and post a link on here and ask for opinions on it. You will want to read the reviews on the video anyways and that right there may be of some good help. Just saying...

I just bought 6 German Kinetics 100gr (from Germany) that were delivered today. I've only heard good things about'em and can't wait to see how they perform

I forget where I saw the link, but there is a video on youtube about a few different broadheads and being shot through some ballistic gell with hog shoulder blades in it. They said that Slick Trick and German Kinetic did the best. I like those German Kinetics because I have seen them do some really nice work on big axis bucks and fallow deer before.

Really?! That's what I'm talking about.. I watched a bear hunt where a guy was using GK's and it zipped through it like nothing!! I bought a buddy of mine some of the 210gr GK's for his Bob Lee, he LOVES them. I'll post a picture up when I get out of the office..

Yeah..I don't know the link but I bet you could find it pretty easy on youtube. I think there was even a mechanical broadhead that they used and you could see that the blades were closed nearly all the way after it has penetrated the shoulder. They even did a 1 on 1 test with the German Kinetic and the Slick trick to see which one lost the edge the quickest and it was after several shots had been made where they said it was nearly dead even the entire time but finally it was a clear point that the German Kinetic won out because it penetrated a considerable amount farther than the slick trick. I say you still need to make your own judgement about what broadheads you want to use but the video was a little interesting to watch.

I am going to go with fixed for sure after talking to some folks and reading this. Going to Smithfield Archery next week to get broadheads and some help with a few other small details. I am shooting a 70lb. Matthews Drenalin.
What grain should I use on a whitetail in Texas? I was thinking 100. Will that give me enough for a good pass through or should I go 125.

100 gr is typically the popular choice of grain weight to use for archers using a compound bow.

I like the fixed. I've used mechanicals before, but keep going back to fixed. The G5 Montec Carbon Steel's are my go to's...

Went by Smithfield Archery today in Fort Worth. They told me I don't need to buy anything. They said the broadheads he gave me with the bow are excellent. Told me to go to Academy and buy the cheapest sharpener they sell. The only thing he would even consider selling me was wax. Told me I as shooting good enough with it the way it was to wait till the end of season before I spent the money changing anything. Very honest and friendly folks there. Most people would probably tried to sell me all sorts of stuff.
