Now to LP point yes the guy that day leases his land and run as many hunters through there to make a buck is not a good steward of the land in my book. Now would it create an issue if a person is filing out the kids, wife, cousins to their place to shoot whatever unfortunate deer shows up on the property? I will never have a problem with any child taking any game..they are our future..no problem with a spouse either.. But if you are having all your aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers, sister in laws coming out and slaughtering everything then I guess when you have no more deer the there won't be a need to have them over anymore..

If you aren't into management, feeding programs, herd control, selective harvest...you are a poor steward of the land Perhaps we think those people are poor stewards because their practices can and do result in unhealthy deer, over grazed flora, increased soil erosion, depletion of favorable plants, negative impacts on many other types of wildlife, increased water pollution, etc. etc. We ARE stewards of the land, like it or not. And whatever we do has an impact. Maybe positive, maybe negative. I prefer positive. So by letting bucks get older and not killing them at a young age, we are avoiding these problems? Don't kid yourself, the management of deer is in place to create bigger bucks, not stop water pollution. So that is what AR's are doing, stopping water pollution since they are letting bucks get older! That is the answer to the million dollar question.

I'm not kidding myslf. I realize the motivations. But look at what happened to some parts of the Hill Country. Gazillions of doe. Not enough bucks, All kinds of problems result. Including plant degradation, increased erosion, etc. The same thing results if a landowner puts too many goats or cattle in a pasture. If you own land, or use land, you ARE a steward. And your actions have consequences.

I thought they were "our" deer? Nope. You own no deer...unless you HF'em, then they might as well be yours.

Personally, I believe that the vast majority of owners and hunters are ethical and good stewards. You seldom hear of a lease that allows you to fill all of your tags with no restrictions. In fact most leases allow you a trophy, a cull/management and a couple of does. Many only allow one buck.
I think the issue is with a few poor stewards that shoot all they can and sell the rest. Is it their right to do that? Yep. But don't they also have a moral obligation to their neighbors to not do that? Yup.
And this is where the quandary begins.
Good fences make good neighbors, so they say.

Those armadillos are getting so bad around my Dad's place in Kansas that he now rides around the sections with his 22 mag and shoots them in the morning and evenings. He likes it more than coyote hunting now.

Good fences make good neighbors, so they say. I agree. Most folks try to do what is right, but there are a few jack wagons that mess it up for the rest. There are also a few that don't buy into the management system and are ridiculed for it.

Good fences make good neighbors, so they say. The new thing in ETX are the small timber tracts that the timber companies can;t sell so they are leasing. A person can lease 40-150 acres at $7 an acre and basically do as they wish in terms of shooting deer.
